We had the good fortune of connecting with Tavia & Michelle Carter & Tatum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tavia & Michelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Neither of us have ever been good employees working a 9-5, our role is more suited to be bosses/leaders. We wanted to start a business in which we had massive passion behind so it would be something we’d be willing to do forever. We both are adamant about the Black Lives Matter movement and realized that the only way to have substantial change is to support one another. So we started All Blaq Everythang, which is all about building unity within our Blaq communities, circulating the Blaq dollar and showcasing Blaq excellence
.
What should our readers know about your business?
The thing that sets us apart from most is that we have a genuine passion for what we are doing and a strong desire for change. That is more important than any type of income we can make in this process, our main focus is long lasting change and the positive impact that will have on us as a people. That part right there is what makes us proud, the fact that we would still do this without making a dime, just off of pure passion is a beautiful feeling.
We got here by being persistent and having a drive and desire for more. It was not easy and honestly still isn’t but it’s worth it. You just have to keep going, there will be always be obstacles in whatever you do, especially if it’s great. But obstacles build posture.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First and foremost we must have breakfast at Houston’s staple The Breakfast Klub, not only is their food tasty but the customer service that is given is one of a kind. They actually set the bar for the way any establishment should treat their customers. With that being said we would end the night with drinks and dancing at Alley Kat, which is also owned by Marcus Davis (owner of TBK) so we know it will be the same vibe. The rest of the week will be filled with all types of blackness….. whether it be museums, nature, Houston hoods, more fine dining and of course music. We will end the week with All Blaq Everythang’s BLAQ FRIDAZE SHOWCASE held in 3rd Ward every 3rd Friday. It will have everything we need to top of the trip, shopping with local vendors, eating good food, vibing to the live entertainment, drinking the best libations and socializing with some dope people
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We both have to give credit to our prior entrepreneurship journeys which gave us the proper mindset and courage to jump out there and do something on our own. But also we were heavily inspired by Issa Rae and Houston’s own Beyoncé. They both are very powerful females breaking industry standards and paving the way for other successful Blaq females. Most importantly both of them are down for the cause and always rooting for everyone BLAQ
