We had the good fortune of connecting with Tayia Revis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tayia, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
One of my favorite quotes is from Dr. Myles Munroe: “Shooting for the clouds is too low. Instead, make the clouds your cushion in case you fall.” These words are so inspiring to me. It reminds me to never stop believing in yourself no matter how big your dream may be. If you can see it; you can achieve it. Despite the trials, and tribulations you may encounter along your journey; knowing if you fall you can always get back up and try again.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My passion for the entertainment industry has inspired me to not only become an actress but writer and director as well. Acting is my gift, it’s what I’m born to do. I truly believe that one day I will have a success story to share with the world of how I made it as an actress, writer, and director. Granted, this has not been an easy journey by far; but it has been worth it. The opportunities I’ve experienced of working alongside of some of the greatest in the industry such as: E. Roger Mitchell (The Quad), Keith David (Greenleaf), Tony Vaughn (Sweet Dirt) and Queen Latifah (Star) are priceless. The knowledge that they shared with me, not only changed my life; but it inspired me to want to be the best and I am truly grateful.
As I look back over my life when I started theater and film in 2012 to where I am today; I can honestly say it was nobody but God who kept me focused. There were moments I wanted to give up. There were seasons that I went through of discouragement questioning myself, “am I dreaming too big?” At times, different thoughts crossed my mind, “Tayia you can’t do this, just give up and try something else.” I reminded myself, yes I CAN do this and yes, I WILL do this.
Through fasting, praying and motivation from close friends; allowed me to refocus on the important things that I needed to accomplish. I started setting small goals to ensure I stayed on track for the larger goals that I had planned. What I come to learn is, no matter what you want to achieve in life; you must plan. As Steve Harvey stated, “write it down and make it plain.” That’s what I had to do. I wrote my vision down on paper along with the steps I needed to take to accomplish my dream. Once I completed my plan, I started going down the list that I created and checking off the small goals I had accomplished. Doing this not only allowed me to see the progression I was making but it also enabled me to see I was moving closer toward my dream. Enclosing, I would like to leave you with a quote from Nelson Mandela that I hope to inspire you, “Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting me for a week, we would start off the itinerary to having some great food, which Houston is known for. I’m originally from Bay City, Texas and I absolutely LOVE my hometown, but Houston has a variety of delicious food to satisfy your hunger. Our first stop would be the Turkey Leg Hut. They are known for their mouthwatering turkey legs. I can attest, the food and drinks are amazing! Another spot that I enjoy hanging out is Cyclone Anaya’s Mexican Kitchen. Once again, the food and drinks here are good as well and the atmosphere is a place to hang out with family and friends. Finally, one of my favorite hangout spots that I absolutely love to unwind is The Davenport Lounge. If you are wanting to experience great music and enjoy some fantastic drinks this is the place to be.
After we have quenched our thirst with good drinks and delicious food; it’s time to burn some calories in our body and in our purses. Yes, it’s shopping time! Our stop to the best mall in Houston, would be to the Galleria. Anything you need, you will definitely find it there. From designer clothes, bags, purses, treats; you name it the Galleria has it. For entertainment: games/fun we would most definitely plan to hangout at the Main Event. Here you can enjoy bowling, music, food, and fun. Overall, these are just a few spots we would hang out at.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to thank God for blessing me with my gifts and talents; without Him there is no me. I would like to thank my family and friends for believing in me. The love and support you have shown along the way mean a lot. What I learned throughout this industry is having a good support group in your corner makes life a little easier to push through your difficult moments. To Mrs. Antoinette Brown of Jesus Always Bringzit Ministries, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be part of your production, “Daughters of the King.” This was my very first role that I booked in theater, and I truly enjoyed the experience.
I would also like to thank Director, Angela Perkins of “Out the Ordinary Productions” for believing in me as well and allowing me the opportunity to work in one of her productions, “To Feel Loved.”. Director Perkins has been an inspiration in my life, and I truly thank God for our professional relationship as well as our friendship. Lastly, I would like to recognize all directors/producers who I’ve had the opportunity to work with and learn from. A special thank you to my acting Coach, George Mc Lean(Atlanta,GA) for being there for me and continuing to push me to become a better actress.
