We had the good fortune of connecting with Tayla Hart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business wasn’t the original goal, I learned to paint while working for a facepainting company in Utah and when I moved to the Houston area I really wanted to keep facepainting a part of my life. Facepainting helps me to get to interact with my community and bring joy to others, and I realized I really needed that in my life. Starting my own facepainting business was a way to achieve that. I was also really motivated this summer to work really hard to grow my business in order to help with the cost of our fertility treatment. It has been an exciting and intimidating journey making all of the decisions you have to make when starting up your own business, and it’s also been wonderful to really be able to making it my own and have complete creative freedom with the direction I take it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been fortunate to have learned from some really amazing artists who helped me to improve my craft at an accelerated rate. I’ve also studied and practiced from a lot of wonderful painters virtually and worked to create my own style. One of the more difficult challenges was moving from a dry climate to a humid one. This changes the consistency of the paint in a significant way and I had to relearn how to create my desired flow. My brand is defined by my designs, and I prioritize my designs being both efficent and having that “wow” factor that makes peoples eyes light up when I hand them the mirror. That joy, that’s what my job is all about.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was visiting, we’d probably go to a few of the museums, the space center, and maybe the beach. As for food, I’d love to take them to Just Mac, Banana Thai, and A1 Choice. We’d probably mostly just hangout talking and catching up.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The company Fantastic Facepainting in Utah provided me with the ability to start facepainting professionally, and I would not be where I am today without them. Their mentorship means the world to me. My husband has been my biggest support throughout this journey and my daughter my biggest fan. They have both encouraged me throughout this journey of making my business what it is today and I know they will be a major part of its future growth.
