We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrance Palmer & Natural Sekhmet P. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terrance Palmer & Natural Sekhmet, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was to start a family business that can be passed down to our children and accumulate generational wealth. Arts and crafts have been a hobby of mine since childhood, so it was great to make money doing what I loved to do. It was also a way to spend time with the children and teach them that working for yourself takes patience and time but it is very rewarding.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
TERRANCE PALMER: All our items are handmade and designed by us. Over ten years ago, Natural’s favorite uncle transitioned. To help her cope with his tragic death, she decided to try her hand at making some of his coconut shell carved jewelry. She taught herself how to make necklaces and earrings out of coconut shell. Natural began to get so much attention from her jewelry, that she opened her first Etsy shop to share her creations with others. She began wire wrapping, wood carving and taught the children and I how to make jewelry. Our black owned family business, EYE Create LLC was opened in 2020 during the Covid -19 pandemic. What makes us stand out from other businesses is that customers can customize items to purchase. Not only do we create and sell handmade jewelry, we also offer body butters, oils, cosmetics, hair care products, apparel, candles, sculptures and home decor. Everything in our shop is made by hand with love. Handmade and homemade items can be quite a challenge, especially when we get an unexpected amount of orders. We have late nights and it can be very time consuming. It teaches us patience. You have to have true love and dedication for the craft. Spending time as a family and doing what we enjoy makes it all worth while.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of our favorite places in Houston is Lucy’s Ethiopian Restaurant located on the Southwest side of town. Their food is absolutely amazing! For those that visit, make sure you try their honey wine. I promise it will be the best wine you have ever tasted! Another place to visit would be The Shrine of the Black Madonna. They host a Buy Black Marketplace every other Saturday. They also have different social events, vending, and a black owned bookstore. Another spot to check out for your fitness needs is a black owned boxing gym named Mo Better Boxing. Their staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and trains from ages 4 and up.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
TERRANCE PALMER: I would like to acknowledge my wife, Natural, She has been my biggest supporter throughout this journey. Since we’ve met, she has always encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. She supported me when I decided to quit my nine to five and step out on faith so we can pursue our dreams as business owners.
