We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrence Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terrence, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Great question. I remember growing up always been around music. My step father had a 50 or so CD Book. I was flipping through this book in 2001, and it had some of the best in Hip-Hop/R&B at the time. Bad Boy, Roc-a-fella Records, 2Pac. The girl groups and even Motown. Mobb Deep. Goodie Mob. My mom and stepdad had CD racks so I could reference the albums I liked and read the liner notes. I was probably in middle school when I knew I wanted to take it seriously. It might sound funny but I wrote some of my first legitimate rhymes watching a 8-Mile rebroadcast on MTV. I was making beats before this. I ended up moving around a lot because of my peoples army background. I remember watching some of the first SMACK DVD’s and seeing arsonist from Heatmakers producing for one of my biggest influences at the time, then I knew I wanted to produce too.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I make unapologetic independent lo-fi (minimalistic) avant-garde driven hip-hop. Grew up idolizing people with voices that wanted change and took action. Not name dropping simply because it’s too many to name. Always felt for some reason I was put here on this earth to inspire and be a leader. Making conscious hip-hop is my medium of doing so. Like many growing up in my era, I had to grow up so fast. Now when I look at the generation coming after me, I wanna be the guide. Knowing that the hardships are coming, being a shoulder to lean on when my voice and beats hit their ears. Let them know they are not alone. I was, you don’t have to be.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to HWY 6 and Briar Forest. There was a park open there during high school. It’s a great walking trail that leads to a large calming pond. Making sure I bring some thing we made at home or whipping out the recipes and cooking on site. Musicial instrumentals available to jam if we want to. Take them to my neighborhood where I grew up on Wilcrest in High School. Take them to Kim’s Teahouse and enjoy life.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Danny Watts and Royce Mansfield. Friends of mine that saw something in me I didn’t see in myself. Helped me develop my sound and are all around genuinely great people. I respect and admire their abilities individually. Still inspiring me till this day even though we all busy and growing. Much love.
