We had the good fortune of connecting with Tillet Mills and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tillet, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I think that people underestimate how much of running your own law firm is about being business minded, as well as being a great attorney. Oftentimes, keeping up with the business part of it occupies most of my time, as I am constantly searching for new ways to get clients, as well as making sure that I stay on top of my current clients’ matters. To succeed, you have to be purely entrepreneurially minded, and it is something that I feel most people wouldn’t think of when they initially think about a law firm.
What should our readers know about your business?
I think what sets me apart is my personal approach to the field of law. I read something the other day that said that AI is a threat to the field of law, but I honestly don’t think that it is in my practice. What I do can’t be duplicated. My clients have my cellphone number, and they know that they can reach me at pretty much any time they need me. To this day, all my clients have been based off referrals, and it continues to be that way, and I’ve grown into a thriving business. I plan on advertising soon, but so far, what I’ve done has worked well. I always say, I just happen to be a good attorney. What that means is, I’m a guy that you can go grab a beer with, but I just so happen to be a great lawyer. Starting off wasn’t easy, but when you’re an entrepreneur, you have to expect those peaks and valleys, as they come with the territory. I learned to always believe in myself, even when things might not be going right, or you didn’t get the result you were hoping for. If there’s anything that I’d like the world to know, it’s that, when you hire me, you’re in good hands.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a big Washington Avenue guy, so I’d say Bottled Blonde.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, I always thank God first, as he is the reason that I’m even here today, and have the opportunity to interview for these outlets. Second of all, I would like to thank Robert A. Jones, the best attorney I’ve ever been blessed to be around. He truly embraced me, and showed me everything I need to know to start my own law firm, and become a great attorney on top of all that. I can’t thank him enough. I would also like to thank my mom and dad for putting up with me all these years, and keeping me on the right track, and finally, I would like to thank Julissa Ovalle for recommending me to this platform!
