We had the good fortune of connecting with TOMAS FERNANDEZ FARINA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TOMAS, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I’m deeply honored to share my journey with you, a path that intertwines the essence of Venezuela with the vibrant spirit of Houston. From my earliest memories in Valencia, where the kitchen became my first playground, to the bustling energy of Houston, every step has been a leap towards fulfilling my dreams and sharing the joy of cooking with others.
At just 19, my life is a tapestry woven from diverse cultures and flavors, a testament to the power of food in bringing people together. My Venezuelan roots, enriched by Italo-Venezuelan heritage, have instilled in me a profound love for culinary exploration. This passion was nurtured in the kitchens of my mother, both grandmother and great-grandmother, whose recipes are a bridge to my past and a beacon for my future.
Moving to Houston in 2016 marked a new chapter in my life, one filled with challenges but also immense growth. It was here that I discovered the resilience to adapt, the courage to embrace a new community, and the determination to make my mark. Through state theater competitions and culinary endeavors, I’ve found my voice and a platform to express my deepest convictions.
My commitment to healthy eating and nutrition has been a cornerstone of my journey. By teaching cooking courses for children and teenagers, I aim to sow the seeds of a healthier future, encouraging young minds to explore the richness of flavors and the benefits of a balanced diet. It’s not just about teaching them to cook but inspiring them to appreciate the art and science behind food.
Representation matters, and as a proud Latino in Houston, I’ve embraced the opportunity to showcase our rich culinary heritage. Participating in cultural events and media platforms has allowed me to be an ambassador of my culture, bridging gaps and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our diverse community.
My culinary adventures have also been a platform for social impact. From cooking for charity events to supporting causes close to my heart, I believe in using my skills to make a difference. Winning the Goya Fathers Tournament wasn’t just a personal achievement; it was an opportunity to contribute to the Lighthouse For Life foundation, a cause that resonates with my ethos of giving back.
Looking ahead, my dreams are as flavorful and ambitious as the dishes I love to create. Studying political science, economics, and gastronomy, I envision opening my own restaurant—a place where every dish tells a story, every meal is an adventure, and every guest leaves with a piece of my heart.
To the Houston community and beyond, my message is simple: let’s embark on this culinary journey together, exploring the limitless possibilities of food as a medium for change, connection, and joy. Through my motto, “COOK WITHOUT RULES,” I invite you to break boundaries, experiment with flavors, and celebrate the diversity that makes our world so wonderfully delicious.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Embarking on a culinary journey rooted in a passion nurtured from a young age, I’ve developed a unique business that stands out through its commitment to fusion cuisine, connecting cultures, and promoting healthy eating. My brand, built on the philosophy of “COCINA SIN REGLAS” (Cook Without Rules), emphasizes creativity, experimentation, and a fearless approach to cooking, setting it apart from others in the industry.
I am most proud of my ability to bridge communities, foster cultural understanding, and influence the younger generation’s eating habits positively. Despite facing challenges such as establishing a business in a new country and overcoming skepticism due to my youth, the support from my family and organizations like Goya Foods has been instrumental in overcoming obstacles and learning valuable lessons about resilience, authenticity, and the power of passion.
My brand and story convey that food is more than nourishment; it’s a powerful medium for change, connection, and joy, celebrating diversity, heritage, and continuous learning. Looking forward, I am excited to expand my reach, explore new culinary landscapes, and continue contributing to community initiatives, reminding everyone that with passion and resilience, anything is possible.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, the journey I’ve embarked upon is far from a solitary endeavor. It’s woven with the threads of encouragement, wisdom, and support from numerous individuals and entities, each holding a pivotal role in my narrative of growth and success. I’d like to take this moment to extend my heartfelt gratitude and dedicate this shoutout to several key pillars in my life.
Firstly, my family stands as my unwavering foundation. Their recipes are not just instructions; they are stories of resilience, culture, and family. My father, with his creative genius and relentless support, has been instrumental in every facet of my journey, from branding to moral support. My brother, the ultimate taste tester and sous-chef, has been my sidekick in countless culinary adventures. Their belief in me has been the cornerstone of my ambition and achievements.
The Houston community deserves a special mention for welcoming me with open arms and allowing me to weave my Italian-Venezuelan heritage into the rich tapestry of its diverse culinary scene. The support and recognition from this vibrant community have been nothing short of inspiring. Lastly, to Goya Foods, thank you for being a beacon of inspiration, for supporting young talents, and for your unwavering commitment to promoting the richness of Latin American cuisine.
