We had the good fortune of connecting with Trey Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trey, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
People outside the industry only see the fun in being a DJ. At the end of the day it’s still a job, and just like any other job, you have to come prepared with the skills and equipment to perform. They don’t see the countless hours being put in outside of the venue making sure that our music is up to date, our cue points are set, and our crates are organized. But being a DJ isn’t just a regular job. It’s what you make it. If I’m having fun then I know the crowd is too and I know I’m my doing my job right.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Getting here wasn’t easy and I’m still not where I want to be but I believe my journey here is setting me up for the long run. Recently, I’ve started doubling down on myself more by just putting my content out more on social media and really promoting myself to show the world that I am a DJ and I can hang with the best of em. What sets me apart from everyone else is that I’m always looking for ways to get better and I’m never going to get comfortable in the position I’m in no matter how good it may seem. Being a DJ has really taught me how to make the most out of every opportunity given no matter what big or small. The biggest thing I’ve taken away from this year is having consistency. And that’s one of the main goals I’m taking with me into the new year, “being more consistent”. I want the world to know I want to be considered one of the best at what I do and I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get there.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I get invited to Prospect Park(Galleria) any day of the week I’m going. The food is always good and the atmosphere is always lit. Once we’ve eaten our next stop would be Parma lounge or Kamp depending on the day of the week. If anybody ever came to visit me they should know we’re going to eat at Lost and Found for Brunch on Sunday and Dinner sometime during the week. They have some top tier food over there and a really dope atmosphere. On Tuesday, Kiss and Heart is a must. On Wednesday we hit Cidercade to kill time and then we head to Prey for a late night dinner vibe. Space, Sekai, Spire, The Address and Playground are just a few of the stops we would make over the weekend. Honestly, Houston is so big the list would never end.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Specifically, I want to shoutout all my friends and family that have supported me with this dream since the beginning. I could’ve quit a long time ago but the encouragement and support from my friends is what keeps me motivated and encouraged to take it to the next level. Most importantly, I want to thank Deuce (DJ Deuce) and AT (DJ Blu) for believing in me and introducing me to the DJ world. I wouldn’t be where I’m at today if it wasn’t for them. And last but not least, my mom, for supporting me in everything I do.
