We had the good fortune of connecting with Trina Cheeks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was why not make money doing something I love to do. Starting a business you have to be dedicated and willing to put in the time and work to make that business successful. When I first started my business I had no idea what I was doing but as time went by I was more committed to making my business successful. No matter what anyone tells you, you become better at something by spending more time on it. Of course you have to put your mind to it and get your feet on the ground and push through to what’s in store.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When I was a little girl I would always watch my mama cook for our family or family gatherings. After the passing of my mother I wanted to do something I know she would be proud of me for doing & I went to culinary school. As a little girl I grew up watching my mother always in the kitchen cooking. I knew when I was that little 8 year old girl standing in the kitchen watching my mother cook Sunday dinner for our family that when I got older I would love to cook just like my mother. While in school I decided to start my catering business. Family & friends supported me immediately and have continued to support me & my business. It is so important to have faith in yourself and your business. Developing your own trust within yourself is more valuable than anything else you could possibly learn in this life. I have been in business for 5 years and I am continuing to grow more & more everyday. Owning a business is definitely not for the weak & it’s not easy but I wouldn’t trade this…my business for anything in this world. YFBGKITCHEN has a Cajun twist mixed with my own personal style of cooking. I love cooking and you can tell from how dedicated I am to letting the world know that I’m here and I’m here to stay!!!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting I would take them to all my favorite food places in the city. When it come to food we would definitely be at all the well known best food places. We could start with a great happy hour at Ra Sushi, lost & found or the address. Anything involving food and good drinks is somewhere I would like to be.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this to my mother who passed away in 2017. So yes this is dedicated to my mother Barbara because if it wasn’t for her and the prayers she prayed over my life I wouldn’t be where or who I am today. I definitely have to shoutout my family, friends and classmates would have continued to support and motivate me when I can’t seem to find that extra motivation to keep pushing. I truly want to thank every last person who has been on this journey with me. I appreciate and love y’all!!
