We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyisha Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyisha, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote is one I recently heard from a classmate that states: “Things I went through did not happen to me, they happened for me; for me to help others overcome life trials and obstacles.” This quote means that sometimes one must totally shift their perspective in this life in order to understand their purpose. I have endured many obstacles and have truly been blessed to overcome them, but there have been times when I felt helpless, alone, and dejected. When I shifted my perspective, I was totally able to see the strength and determination that I possessed. I like this quote because it can ring true if you let it. We often give certain situations so much negative power over our lives and it is so important to see how things you endured helped you to grow and evolve. I also like this quote because it gives me so much motivation to want to help people from my unique perspective and life experiences.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
First thing that keeps me busy is my career and passion as an educator. This is my 19th year in education and with the Covid lens, busy has been an understatement. Second, in January I published my first solo publication, a prayer journal and devotional titled, Dear Lord Thank You: Daily Heart to Heart Prayers with God in Reverence, Relationship, and Reflection. I have found that once you release a project, it is super important to market and promote it and I am proud to say that from the love and support I have received, I was able to become an Amazon’s Best Seller with Dear Lord, Thank You. I am so blessed to continue my writing journey as a contributing author in the new release of I’m Speaking: Rewritten Rules of Encouragement to Affirm written by a community of women disruptors.
In February, I launched Ty Jenkins Inspires, LLC which keeps me pretty busy, a good busy that I am so grateful for. My business was created to inspire others to show up as their true selves and go after their dreams while impacting the world around them. I am a certified life coach and I have begun my Power Forward life coaching where I offer 1-on-1 sessions and group sessions that are designed to help individuals with goal setting, overcoming obstacles, developing a healthy and positive mindset, and growing in their personal and professional lives. I also offer Writing to Win writing coaching for adults and high school and college students. I am also busy inspiring others by sharing my story through public and motivational speaking. Some of my speaking topics are embracing life after loss, seeing beyond your current situation, shedding shame in order to show up fully, and overcoming obstacles in order to live the life you are destined for. Starting my new journey as a business owner has not been easy because I have had to tap into a reserve that I did not know I had spiritually, mentally, physically, creatively, and emotionally. I have had to push through my own moments of self-doubt and self-sabotage. When you are elevating and evolving, you must make sure you take your mindset with you. You cannot operate at the same level of thinking when you are trying to reach a new level in your career and business. I have learned that you can truly do anything that you put your heart and mind to. There is room out here for everyone to be successful, you just have to want it. The world has changed so much right before our eyes, but opportunities are still available for us all. I want the world to know that we all have gifts and talents, but we must believe in ourselves and what God has given us. My story is one of powering forward into my winning season. I have suffered many losses, but this is my Jackie Robinson year, the year I turned 42 years old, and I am hitting nothing but home runs. I am determined to rewrite my story, one of resilience and triumph.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am such a homebody and I really don’t venture out very much, so if I had my best friend come to Houston, we would be experiencing lots of firsts together. I would certainly start the week off with a nice spa day at Milk + Honey Spa in River Oaks, relaxing and pampering is a must. We would go to lunch at one of my favorite spots, Grand Lux and maybe do some shopping at the Galleria. I would definitely try some of Houston’s premier eateries throughout the week such as Kulture, Taste of Texas, Taste Bar Kitchen, Mastro’s, and Steak 48, which happens to be the only one mentioned that I have actually gone to unfortunately. We would have to hit some of my favorite spots as well, such as Black Walnut Cafe, That’s My Dog, and some local food trucks. We would hang out in City Center, Town Lake, and maybe travel to the Woodlands. I think we would even stay a night or two at the Marriott Marquis just to take a picture of the pool. LOL! Houston is so big and so fun; I honestly don’t get out enough. I feel like I should definitely get out to see my city more. My best friend is a homebody also, so a few days of getting out and about would be enough for us. Relaxing and catching up on old school movies and memories at my house would be enough fun for us.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out Dr. Kimberly Ellison, my dear sister, friend, destiny pusher, prayer partner, and publisher. Dr. Kimberly Ellison is the founder of Sparkle Publishing and she has sparked me to operate in purpose as I pursued my dream of becoming a published author. Kimberly pushed me and brought out the best in me in so many ways. She also encouraged me to step out on faith as a life coach and entrepreneur. This woman shines in everything she does, and she makes room for everyone she can to get to the next level. She is a woman who truly wants to see everyone win!
