We had the good fortune of connecting with Tynecia Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tynecia, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote is “Believe you can and you will be halfway there”. I believe that people have to take initiative to accomplish their goals through hardships, and lack of support. Many times we let others dim our light. We think because a goal seems unrealistic or we’re the first person we know to do it then it’s not possible. Regardless of the outside sources we have to have tunnel vision and believe in ourselves, our future and just that we’re worthy. You have to find the inner strength to push forwards and have the confidence to succeed. Continue to work and think about how you want your life to end up. I always hear how I am admirable or that people are shocked that I am so young yet know what I want to do. I recognized that I wanted to own my own business and be my own boss. I did all the research and just stated. I think the important thing is not to wait until you’re ready but to just put your foot in the water. Some people wait a lifetime to chase their dreams because they don’t think they have the capacity to do it. For me I learn as I go. Since I am a first generation college student and the first business owner in my family I don’t always know the correct answers but I continue to push myself out of the weather that’s being a part of a fashion show, going to brunches to network or even going to another state to get inventory. I also recognize that to me my business is much more thanks just a clothing brand. It represents the quality that I align myself with, it includes a social program to help people with financial hardships.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand is Simply Neci Boutique, I started this business during my sophomore year of college. Growing up I learned how to sew with my grandmother throughout my childhood. Since my family was low income my grandmother always encouraged me to do well in school and we were able to lean into our creativity side. I wanted to start this business because it’s hard to find clothing in your size and design that you want. I want to make these special moments that people experience to be Magical. For me one of the hardest things I have to overcome is people being biased towards me for being an young African American women. I have to make sure that all my documents are aligned and that I am very professional. When people see me the first thing they notice is my age and my skin color. It’s not common to see young black women owning a business or doing positive things in the community. To over come this I had to make sure that I went above and beyond establishing my business. Creating tik toks and doing fashion shows. In a addition to this I had to spend lots of money in order to sample my clothes. I want to make sure that all peace’s are quality. I believe that my generation especially college student enjoy the fast fashion because it’s cheap and yours Able to get more for less. Currently the hardest part about this journey is navigating my life as a STEM student and a business owner. Not only do I have to have time to promote my business but I have to also do this while preparing for test and trying to get my career started.
The thing I am most proud of is my adopt a senior program. It’s has allowed me to reach out to high school students who are apart of the minority community. I am able to give them advice and be a mentor to them. Most people don’t understand how important prom is, sadly since I graduated high school during Covid, I missed many activities. This is difficult and currently I am finding ways to try to get funding and even make it bigger. I hope it grows and help many people. Giving them their dream cost without having to stress about money.
