We had the good fortune of connecting with Vashti Simone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vashti, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Growing up, I had really bad acne. I was always looking for ways to cover my acne scars. Once I came across makeup my life changed forever. I was so amazed at how makeup could literally change your whole appearance while also covering any imperfections on your face. Not only did makeup become a confidence booster for me, but it also became an outlet for me to truly express myself and be who I wanted to be in that moment. Makeup became my therapy while also making me feel beautiful. When starting my brand Vashti Simone Cosmetics, that was my goal. I wanted to create a makeup brand for women to feel free of any imperfections, to express themselves, and to be whoever they would like to be when wearing Vashti Simone Cosmetics. I wanted to create a makeup brand that would remind women of who they are! The best thing about it all, is that the world will always need makeup.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I was in high school, I had such a passion for doing makeup. Everybody knew me for beating faces. I made a name for myself from doing makeup. Makeup was a super easy way for me to make my money, I mean quick money in a legit way. It wasn’t until I got out of high school that I realized I could be making way more money and reaching way more people by starting a makeup line of my own. When doing makeup on other people, sure you could travel and get to do makeup on people in other states, but it wasn’t nearly as many people that I could be reaching by selling a product of my own. I’m only one person, there’s only so many places I can be until my body gets tired. However, a product with my name on it can be getting shipped worldwide. Once I realized that, I knew that with my cosmetics line I could really create generational wealth for myself and my family. Vashti Simone cosmetics can be something huge. It can be something that is still very relevant years and years down the line when I’m not even here anymore. Transitioning from doing makeup to selling makeup hasn’t been easy. In fact, there’s a lot more that goes into selling makeup, rather than doing makeup. My brand isn’t nearly where I want t to be, but it is in fact well worth it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always knew I wanted to be a business woman, but it wasn’t until my amazing son Kaizer came into my life that I finally decided to really give it my all. The times when I feel like giving up, I always look at my son Kaizer, and his big smile always reminds me that the sky is the limit.
