We had the good fortune of connecting with Victoria Larson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Victoria, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by music and architecture. Especially the way they interact with nature. Juxtaposition and duality are things that I love to explore through my art.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have two sides to my photography. The first is my personal photography business – weddings, portraits, & creative. Then there is my day job which is product photography. These both have required me to put in countless time and money into myself. Investing in education and experimenting to find out what my artistic style is has allowed me to find out exactly who I am creatively. Keep applying to the jobs and keep doing what you love for you. Those hours perfecting your craft will translate directly into marketable skills. It was not easy to get to where I am today. I had to work several jobs that had absolutely nothing to do with what I wanted to be doing. Sometimes you have to do what you can to pay the bills while still working on your art. It’s so easy to get discourage and lost in the 9-5 but I promise you’ll get the call that you’ve been waiting for. I’d also love to say that manifesting and vision boards really do help keep your goals on the front of your mind. My brand has started with my photography business but I plan in expanding into other areas. Don’t limit yourself to one thing either, you can follow all your callings
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Austin is an amazing place to visit and there is so much to do. On day one we’d hit up South Congress for local shopping and amazing food at a spot like June’s All Day, Perlas, or Homeslice. A day of sitting by the pool followed by dinner & shopping at the domain in north Austin is a must as well, Culinary Dropout is always a delicious reliable spot. Hitting up the adult arcade or the instagrammable Wonderbar are great ways to end your night there. A day of swimming at Barton Springs and a picnic at Zilker park to watch the sunset reflected by the city. Another great day in Austin would be browsing the downtown library and grabbing yummy chicken tacos at their cafe called the Cookbook or at true food kitchen right across the way and ending the day with some kayaking on Lady Bird Lake or hiking the greenbelt. Lastly, a day out on Lake Travis and dinner with a view at the Oasis. On the weekend we would hit up sixth street at night for drinks and dancing at Bufords or The Ranch and a perfect Sunday Funday by heading to Rainey street starting at either Bangers for live music and manmosas or at Anthem for amazing food.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The people I have to thank for getting me to where I am today is everyone that hired me and took a chance on me as I was learning and figuring out my style and the technical aspects of photography.
