We had the good fortune of connecting with Vincent Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vincent, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’m a firm believer that just because you take a risk, doesn’t mean you have to be reckless. I’m always surrounding myself with people that are smarter than me who can offer great advice. I get their insight on any risks I’m taking and make sure I have support throughout the risk-taking process.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My dad was the first person that put a camera in my hand. From then on, I continued to tell stories in any capacity I could. As I grew older, I continued to work hard and seek out opportunities for work AND for growth in my profession. Getting into USC’s School of Cinematic Arts was a game-changer. The people I met, the things I learned, and the sleep I lost (lol) were all vital in my growth as a director and all-around creative. Since graduating, I’ve continued to consult and continued to tell stories. I want to continue to not only tell my stories but also create opportunities for underrepresented creatives to also tell theirs in an elevated way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best place to hang is definitely my house…lol. I’m a homebody. And anyone that knows me closely knows that the good time always happens in my home. I’ll have a room for you and my wife will throw down in the kitchen. If we just HAVE to go somewhere for food…let’s hit my old neighborhood, Acres Homes for some bbq down at Burns.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes out to my tribe. The ones that I talk to multiple times a day, vent to, cry to, laugh with, panic to…everything. They keep me focused, and they keep me grounded. Of course, I have to thank my wife. She’s everything I could ask for in a partner in life, love, work, and marriage.
