We had the good fortune of connecting with Vivi Von Welt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vivi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started modeling because I wanted to be on the other side of the lease after being behind the camera. I was inspired by pinup culture and just kind of started from there.Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a plus size model who wishes to bring appreciation to the beauty of the plus size body. I think I have a distinct style that includes vintage, glamour, fine art,, burlesque and boudoir all together. I got here through a lot of hard work. I started out on large group shoots, shooting with whoever would shoot me. Slowly, I started to make contacts in the community. I attended more group shoots and started getting more photographers wanting to work with me after I had been sharing more of my work. From there I started planning and booking individual shoots and collaborated with photographers and locations and makeup’ or special effects artists. It has not been easy. I have had to overcome the challenges of fat phobia and weight stigma. I have had to show that I have value in being a collaborative partner. Anything you truly want is hard to have. You have to work for it. There are no short cuts. Make the way. Cut your own path. There will be people that don’t like you and people that do. Work with those you vibe with. The others don’t truly matter. Focus on developing your brand, your name, your quality, and a general idea of what someone should expect by working with you. I want the world to know larger bodies are beautiful.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friends downtown. We would take a little ride outside of the city and visit Seabrook waffle company for some breakfasts. We would eat some lunch at The Grove by Discovery Green, have some wine and dinner at a great little place, “How to Live by Land and Sea”, visit Sawyer Yards for some art, maybe take in some museums. Definitely we would hit up some burlesque shows that there are during the week throughout the city.Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my friend Ashly, to my supportive friends, to my husband, my friend Andrei, the many amazing photographers I’ve worked with and the people who have chosen to work with my in many ways.
