We had the good fortune of connecting with Wilson Chaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wilson, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk equals Reward. I think that’s the perfect way to sum it up. It’s definitely played a huge role in my career. In this industry you can’t be scared, people sense weakness all the time, and once you express a hint of it they will expose it. One of the biggest risk I’ve taken was helping start my own media network. I was called crazy or even stupid for not even wanting to work at a local news station after graduating college, but now looking 3 years later UFM TV has made several news outlets, worked with a professional football league (while I was still in school) and even have huge sponsorships on the way. It’s still in it’s incubation stage but the work is definitely showing.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well UFM TV came about in 2020-2021. During quarantine some of my friends from Texas Southern and I were talking about starting our own media network where we can produce our own podcast and shows. I already had my own podcast called “In My Humble Opinion” but I wanted more out of life, one day I stayed up until maybe 4-5 AM to create a blueprint and that’s how it came about. The thing that really separates us from the rest is our authenticity, we tell the stories that the mainstream media won’t care to speak about, whether it’s through Podcasts, Articles or documentaries. So far the thing I’m the most proud of with the business is having the opportunity to work with the AFA (Arena Football Association) and making several publication outlets just by posting news on Twitter, something small like that can give you massive exposure if you execute it right. It definitely wasn’t easy, took a lot of research and analysis on what the public consumes on a daily basis but eventually when you make mistakes and learn from it, that’s how you’re able to perfect your craft. What I want the world to know about UFM TV is that we’re about to takeover, it might take 5 years or even 10 but we will be on top of the media industry in the future and our consistency and innovation will set us apart from the competition. There are some massive plans in the works right now so all I can say is…….just wait and see.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not a huge outside guy so this list might not be as good as the next person. Definitely hit up the Museum of Fine Arts here in Houston. I’m mostly into artwork and other creative things so that would be a fun way to start. Cidercade is really fun too, it’s an arcade spot here where they have all types of games and decent drinks. I like a lot of quiet spots too so Mercantile and Day 6 Coffee shop is nice place to maybe chill and read. Seafood and Pizza are my favorite foods but there’s so many good places here to try and narrow it down. Two Guys Pizzeria and Crab Station are some of my favorite food spots right now honestly.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely my guys Jamail Matthews, Isaiah Thornton, Jabari Sherman, and the rest of the guys in the UFM TV group. I can’t tell you how many times where I was down and out in certain situations and they picked up the slack big time. There was even a time in February where I had a tooth infection and my mouth was swollen to the size of a golf ball. I couldn’t speak or anything. We had an initiative we were doing that month called #ShareOurStores for Black History Month and Jamail ended up doing the segments every single week for the month. To this day I can’t thank him enough for that. He has his own newsletter too called “Unmatched Sports” and he’s a hell of a writer.
