We had the good fortune of connecting with Yvonne Cobb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yvonne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting TakeAway Tax was geared around solving a need in my industry. It was to adopt a new process for clients seeking more flexibility and attention to the failing responsibilities of tax preparation. The business started as a necessity for all types of clients!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What most people have in mind about their business successes is different, but it was not an easy journey. I initially went into the industry with a solo mindset. I was not looking to grow it into the brand it is today. It was seasonal for me in the beginning. I perceived it to be an additional income for my household. As time went on, I began to see the opportunity to build processes and systems that would allow me to compete in this market by offering the brand expansion with franchising its model to other willing entrepreneurs looking to gain knowledge in this industry and support. But packaging this offering would not be easy, but what is the risk if it would spring new and innovative processes to an industry in need of a shift.
One hurdle for me was knowing when it was time to expand the brand with like-minded teammates. I went through a period of distrust because everyone is not as passionate as you are about your company. I learned early you don’t build your team out of emotions and don’t look too close to home. You first have to see beyond the present and bring in talent that adds something you are missing and self-starters that can follow.
The brand we serve is one of dependability; we pride ourselves on offering a concierge approach to your tax situation while offering ongoing planning and advice to meet your current and future challenges.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is one of the best places to live! The melting pot is a real saying. I would have them get a hotel stay either at hotel Zaza or post oak hotel it is amazing experience. Visit the museums in med center, enjoy of murals graffiti tour in EADO, Ride scooters in the streets of downtown at dusk, Use the Facebook group hitting up all food truck parks in city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey has had many people, books and mentors involved. Most have played impactful parts in my success. One will be my roots, my Grandfather, Roosevelt Hollis, who was the person that grounded morals, discipline and taught love your inner self first. Books by Robert Kiyosaki about changing your mindset about money. As well as mentors like my parents, who groomed that hard work do not have to be assumed to be a negative thing; it’s just a visual of your dedication.
