We had the good fortune of connecting with Zulmie Lorminey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zulmie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Funny story, I never thought I was starting a business. I just wanted to share my Poetry and help others heal through the power of Poetry. I wanted to share my tools, tips, and knowledge to help others on their self-love journey. I wanted to do it through Poetry, workshops, Motivational Speaking, and events to name a few. I knew getting my Poetry out in the form of a book was the first step. Again, I did not know that being an Author was being an Entrepreneur.
I went through all the fundamental steps of starting a business. However, not once did I think being an Author was being a business owner. The entire time I had to sell and promote my book. I still did not view myself as a business owner. It wasn’t until I was asked for my business EIN for a workshop contract I signed. It all clicked that moment. The more I would do I learned along the way that I was running a small business.
I guess you can say I started my business because I wanted to help and save others that were, are, and is in the same space I was in.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My Art saved and healed me. It was there for me in my most darkest moments. Deciding to share my Art with the world was my way of helping and saving others. My Art is centered around that search for Love. My Poetry highlights each experience of what I thought Love was. I am excited that my experiences led me to find the Greatest Love of ALL, ME. The level of love and confidence it took to get here was not easy. It took a lot of heart break, pain, and hurt. I cried and worked on me. I had good counsel, I had a good support system, I reflected constantly (asked WHY a lot), I created Art, I read a lot, I took care of my health, and I surrounded myself with people that aligned with the true me.
I truly learned the lesson of if YOU DO NOT LOVE YOURSELF, it’s impossible to love others. Many people search for love outside of self. I can attest to how bad I wanted someone to love me, see me, validate me, and make me happy. So, we settle and compromise ourselves just to feel love, not knowing that it is not true love. Now that I know what loving myself is I can honestly say, that was not love. Yeah, it felt good, when it was good but it was not pure or true. I want the world to know and I want to shout it out from the mountain top LOVE YOURSELF and EVERYTHING WILL work out.
I want women and men to know that no matter the age, you can learn to Love yourself so, you can be everything and anything you need for yourself. This is where your life begins. You are the answer to what you seek and desire. Even when what you thought was love ends you can LIVE again and truly Live. I want to empower women and men, young and old with this live changing practical wisdom.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend Rayna was to make it for a weekend I would pull out my list of things I wanted to do with a friend. I would first let her rest for a day. She is a Mom and does not get a lot of rest. Therefore, our first day would be a stay in nice hotel central to everything in the city.
Day 1- We would binge watch a show and order her favorite food (asian).
Day 2- Breakfast at Real Milk & Honey and Park day (she loves nature)
Day 3- Open Mic at Black Coffee
Day 4- Helicopter ride over the city and dinner at Zeke’s Kitchen & Bar
Day 5- Beach Day
Day 6- Candle Light Concert
Day 7- Rest
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to every family member and friends that were a constant present while I healed. I want to send a special thanks to my baby sister and brother-in-love that opened their home and gave me the space to heal and regroup. I want to thank my mother for supporting me no matter what I decided to do, especially giving me the wedding of my dreams even when she knew he was not the fit for me.
I am forever grateful. I want to thank every one that continuously support me as a creative. You keep me going. I want to thank Marie Valerie Placide who sees me and supports in a way that speaks volumes of how AMAZING she is. You heard the saying that their are people that mention your name in spaces and places you have yet to arrive to? Well Marie Valerie Placide is that person. What makes Marie so amazing is that we never met physically just in the virtual space. Marie I am grateful for you and your support.
