We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandra de la Rosa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandra, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
BOX 13 ArtSpace was founded a 15 years ago with the goal of having affordable studio spaces and exhibition opportunities for emerging and established artists. We are also a platform for contemporary experimental arts.
All the current resident artists are inspired and committed to continue our mission because there is a huge benefit to providing artists with an affordable studios. At BOX 13 artists are encouraged to pursue their studio practice to the max and have access to peers for feedback.
As the current president of BOX 13, I am inspired to continue our mission because of all the resident artists in our space. Its hard to do this job as an unpaid volunteer but I have to much respect and admiration for the artist that have studios with us and know that without BOX 13, a lot of them would struggle to find an affordable studios.
What should our readers know about your business?
What sets us apart is that we are and art space that is 100% artist run and 100% volunteer run and our exhibition opportunities are 100% free. Admission to our exhibitions is also free.
People should know where we are located and come visit us!
As the latest president, I cannot take credit for the successes of BOX 13 and where it is today, that credit goes to all past and present resident artists. What I am proud of myself is that I can help BOX 13 continue its mission.
As for lessons, theres always something new happening at BOX 13. I’ve learned that you have to be flexible, apologize when you make a mistake, and think quick when a problem arrises.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For food I would take them to Tout Suite on Commerce. I would take them to several galleries and museums but it would depend what exhibitions are up, all my friends are artists.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Emily Link
Emily was the past president of BOX 13 ArtSpace. Her leadership skills are impressive and she worked really hard to keep BOX 13 going during the 2020 lockdown. She mentored me to be able to take the role of president and continues to support our efforts. She is also an incredible artist and a super nice person.
