We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Mousel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first started training in martial arts in 1980, I quickly discovered my passion for helping others learn self-defense. Over the years, I developed my skills and knowledge to the point where I felt confident in teaching women how to protect themselves. This passion drove me to create a business empowering women through self-defense training.
The thought process behind starting my own business was rooted in the desire to provide women with the tools and knowledge they need to feel safe and confident in their everyday lives. I recognized the importance of teaching self-defense specifically tailored to women, considering their unique challenges in dangerous situations.
I wanted to create a comprehensive course that covers essential self-defense techniques and strategies designed to empower women and help them avoid, navigate, and survive violent encounters. Through teaching at corporations, private groups, women’s groups, and one-on-one sessions, I have continually refined and improved my course content to ensure it remains relevant and practical.
What should our readers know about your business?
My women’s self-defense business is built on a foundation of practicality and effectiveness, which sets it apart from many others in the field. Everything I teach has been pressure tested, ensuring that it’s not just textbook theory but also a proven, functional method. I have personally put myself on the line to test these techniques against strong resistance, ensuring that they will work when needed most.
Establishing my self-defense business has been a long and challenging journey, but it has been gratifying. It wasn’t easy, as starting a business often involves many obstacles and setbacks. I had to overcome financial challenges, create awareness about my courses, and continually adapt to the ever-changing market and customer needs. Through perseverance, determination, and an unwavering commitment to my mission, I have overcome these hurdles and continue growing my business.
Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned along the way include the value of patience, adaptability, and the importance of continually learning and evolving as an instructor. In the world of self-defense, techniques, and strategies are constantly developing, and staying informed and ahead of the curve is crucial. By continuously refining my course content and teaching methods, I have maintained high effectiveness in my self-defense training.
I am incredibly proud of and excited about my self-defense courses’ impact on the lives of women who participate in them. The ability to empower women and provide them with the tools to protect themselves and their loved ones is something I take immense pride in. Seeing the difference my training can make in helping women feel more confident and secure in their daily lives is gratifying.
I want the world to know that my brand and story are built on a foundation of practicality, effectiveness, and passion. My mission is to empower women with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves and their loved ones, giving them the security and peace of mind they deserve. By providing tested, reliable self-defense training, I am dedicated to positively impacting the lives of women, one course at a time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
During a week-long trip, I would ensure that my best friend experiences the best the area offers, creating an itinerary filled with exciting activities, delicious food, and memorable moments. Here’s a suggested plan:
Day 1:
Start the day with breakfast at a local café.
Head to the Freedom Boat Club in Kemah for a day of boating.
Day 2:
After breakfast, spend the day riding ATVs at Xtreme ATV Park & Beach in Crosby.
Day 3:
My best friend is also into martial arts, so we would dedicate a day to train together, sharing techniques, and having a great workout.
Day 4:
Venture to Sam Houston National Forest and ride dirt bikes through the scenic trails.
Day 5:
Enjoy a relaxing day with an evening of Xbox gaming, providing some downtime after the previous days’ adventures.
Day 6:
Dinner at Jax Grill on Shepherd.
Head to Rise Rooftop for a concert.
Day 7:
Spend the day kayaking at the Towne Lake boardwalk area.
In the evening, I gather with my friends in Houston for a get-together, introducing my best friend to the fantastic people in my life.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to all the instructors who have played a significant role in my journey and contributed to developing my skills, knowledge, and passion for martial arts and self-defense. Each of these individuals has, in their way, shaped my understanding of self-defense and inspired me to pursue my mission of empowering women through self-defense training.
I want to thank Lee Merrick, Ben Springer, and Bob Kisting for their early guidance and mentorship in my martial arts journey. Their teachings laid the foundation for my understanding of martial arts and self-defense, and their support played a crucial role in my growth as a practitioner and instructor.
I’d also like to thank Rick Faye, Dan Inosanto, Chai Sirisute, Erik Paulson, Rickson Gracie, Leonardo Xavier, and Carlos Machado for their invaluable instruction and expertise in various martial arts disciplines. These individuals have not only shared their wealth of knowledge with me, but they have also served as role models, inspiring me to continue learning and pushing myself to be the best instructor I can be.
I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to learn from such accomplished and dedicated martial artists.
Their collective influence has undoubtedly shaped the course content and teaching methodologies I use in my Women’s Self-Defense Course. Without their support, guidance, and mentorship, my self-defense business would not be what it is today. It is with great honor and appreciation that I dedicate this shoutout to them, recognizing their essential contributions to my story and success.
I also want to thank the numerous training partners and students I’ve enjoyed working with. They have been instrumental in helping me refine my techniques, challenge my assumptions, and grow as a martial artist and an instructor.
My training partners have provided a supportive environment where I could test my skills, learn from my mistakes, and push my boundaries. They have been essential in my development as a martial artist and have helped me understand the practical applications of the techniques and strategies I teach in my Women’s Self-Defense Course.
My students have been an invaluable source of inspiration and motivation. They constantly remind me of the importance of my work and have helped me refine my teaching methods to serve their needs better. Their feedback, dedication, and determination have been crucial in shaping the success of my self-defense business.
I want to extend my most profound appreciation to all of my training partners and students, past and present, for their unwavering support and contributions to my journey. Their impact on my growth as a martial artist and instructor cannot be overstated, and they, too, deserve recognition and credit for their role in my story.
