We had the good fortune of connecting with Yndra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Yndra, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued singing-songwriting as a creative career because it is the perfect outlet for me. It allows me to express myself in a beautiful way, when I was younger I used to write songs when I was sad, they were very random and most of the time had nothing to do with what I was going through, but it was the perfect escape for me. What really encouraged me to keep doing music was making my first proper song Star. I saw my writing in a different way and I felt like every lyric could resonate with people. I love it when people can relate to what I have gone through, it’s comforting.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love creating a world and being able to bring it to life with my music , not only through my writing but through my clothes, my makeup, visuals, etc. I feel like my music can transport you somewhere beautiful. My writing speaks from the vulnerable parts of me with honest lyrics. I want to soothe with dreamy music to allow listeners to relax. I love slow-mid tempo r&b music, that has heavily influenced the type of music I create. I am where I am today because of my supportive friends and family. I am blessed to have extremely talented friends who are also creatives. I met my friend Omai in High School in a Film class and from the first day we met we clicked so well creatively. She directed my first music video and has helped me with the release of my current single Dreamland, I am eternally grateful for her. She has definitely lightened my load. Before her, I was doing everything myself and it was a little overwhelming and I felt a little bit lost. Growing up I was never active on social media so I wasn’t too comfortable with having to share myself on the internet and also had no clue how to, but I will say slowly but surely I am getting more comfortable with social media. I had to change the way I viewed myself and stopped looking at myself from such a harsh lens. It’s all on how you use it, you have full control. I want the world to know that I am rooting for each and every person, I only wants what’s good for the people around me, because I think we all deserve good things, we all go through stuff, we all want love and we all need some comforting at times.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definetly start by taking them to the POST Houston in Downtown Houston, the post has wonderful food from different cultures as well as drinks. Aside from food and drinks they also have a view of the Houston skyline on the sky lawn that is the texas-sized. Another cool thing about the post is the 713 Music hall is very close so I would get my friend and I tickets to a concert. I also think that the Dun Huang Plaza is a fun way to spend a night out. They have Asian dining, shopping and self care. It is one of my fav places to explore they truly have great gems.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out All About Love by Bell Hooks, I had that book on my wish list for a long time and I got it as a gift on Christmas. That book was given to me when I most needed it. I didn’t really know what love looked like to me and All About Love helped me unlearn the toxic misconceptions about love. After reading All About Love I feel like I have developed a healthier view on love and what kind of love I envision for myself.
