Meet Jorge and Daniela Cauich Inverse Art | Artists and Jewelry Designers

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jorge and Daniela Cauich Inverse Art and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jorge and Daniela, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Daniela: I would say they’ve become more interwoven, but not in the sense that it’s overwhelming. Art is a way of life for us both, and it only feels natural to do a little something each day. We have two children, so sometimes, we can do a lot, sometimes we do a little where we can, and sometimes nothing gets done- and that’s okay. We are done beating ourselves up about it and it feels good to simply create for the sake of creating. I personally follow a lot of accounts on Instagram that are geared towards the artist as a whole, and I feel my own personal journey with art has become “any forward motion is another step towards good things” but also, “once you start creating to impress others, you’ve lost the plot”. So even on a day that appears imbalanced, I am proud of what we are doing and find joy in that.

Jorge: I still have a day job, so there are times when it’s especially hard to strike a balance. I need a steady hand to complete my projects, and if I’m not rested well, I can’t work. This can upset me at times, but I am working on cutting myself some slack and picking projects that I can handle in the meantime. Sometimes I can chip away at a large piece of artwork for days when I’m too tired. Other times I’ll sketch out new ideas for jewelry and go from there. Daniela has helped me see that even on the days where I’m stuck or tired, I can still create in small ways or brainstorm and be proud of that.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Without sounding rude or stuck up, we feel like we bring something new to the market when it comes to jewelry. We literally want to make our art WEARABLE. That’s our thing. We love to paint and draw, but not everyone is willing to commit to spending hundreds to thousands of dollars all the time. That’s why we did this, to show people that you can wear the art you’re inspired by. To take risks in your fashion choices. To let your style speak loudly.

Today, we are still growing in our business. Markets are unpredictable, but we have started carrying a wider variety of products so that people with tighter budgets can still walk away with something cool. We have bookmarks for five dollars, single bead and driftwood necklaces for ten to fifteen, smaller earrings for fifteen, prints for twenty, and we are looking to do even more. Art is for everyone, not just people with money.

This has not been an easy journey. We have gone through some setbacks financially, but we are learning and pivoting as we go, and we are really proud of that. We do our best to listen to what our customers want and meet those needs as soon as possible in ways that are feasible to us and our family.

We want the world to know that even if our pieces seem intimidating, they’re not. We ALWAYS encourage people to touch and pick up anything they see, because it’s all made to be worn and loved. As we said, art is for everyone! And everyone is beautiful in their own unique way. We strive to create many styles so that our customers can find something they identify with.
Daniela: I think sometimes, people are afraid of wearing statement jewelry because they think they can’t pull it off. I’ve even heard people say things like that at markets. I am personally not afraid of this; I love changing my style all the time and use it as a way to express myself and set myself apart. I want to spread that longing for individuality to our customers, and to our children as well. This is why we make brightly coloured pieces AND black and whites/neutrals. There is a piece for every outfit and personality. Give it a shot!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s so many delicious and diverse places to eat here, and we are very proud of that. It’s easy to start off with the food. Pondicheri, The Rice Box, Jinya, Maharajah Bhog, Phoenicia, San San Tofu, Korny Vibes, Local Foods, Chuy’s, Cascabel, Veegos, Bombay Sweets

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Daniela: Definitely my parents. They’ve been such strong supporters of ours since the beginning. They’ll send extra supplies or surprise us with new tools or paint that they’ve discovered, and they are always there to encourage us.

Jorge: And Laura Beth.

Daniela: Yes! My best friend. She has brought her friends, family, and classmates to our markets, wears our jewelry, gives it as gifts, helps with our kids when she can, and her mom, Elizabeth, is fantastic too.
