We had the good fortune of connecting with Stiff Barbie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stiff, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
It takes A lot to be an artist! You will invest not only your free time but your money until the big money starts coming in. I did A lot of free shows, features and promotions in order to gain the following I have today. I accepted a lot of bookings for free just so my name was tied in with whoever was running the show.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a female rapper. Nowadays females are leading the music industry daily but in Houston overall its very hard to be a female rapper in a tough headed city. Not only am I a Female rapper but Im also a mother. To be a mother in the rap industry is very hard because not only are you investing your time into your craft but Im having to invest time away from my 2 children! Im proud of my growth mainly being a young rapper based out of Conroe I was 17 rapping senior year and now im 22 Still pushing thru every obstacle that has been thrown my way! Ive built a platform for myself where my cult fanbase supports anything and everything I do. It wasn’t easy getting to where I am now. I had to stay out late away from the kids in order to perform at popular shows/festivals. I had to work multiple jobs so that way I could Afford being a rapper. Not only do you have to invest into making music but you are ideally selling yourself (your image). With that being said you have to maintain your looks ex, nails lashes, working out, clothes, hair stylist etc. just to be done up for one show or music video. The best way to overcome any challenges thrown at you is to push thru them, Find a way to overcome it and be optimistic Ive learned in the music industry that every deal isn’t a good deal! Read the fine lines don’t take every free handout. You cannot trust everyone with a pretty smile or a big name they hit you up for a reason and most of the time its not a good reason. I want the world to know that its okay to be you! Its okay to be yourself even if you are a mom. Do what makes you happy!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bff was visiting I would take them to a weekend trip in Austin. We would prob hit 6th street at night, go ride scooters downtown and float the river or ride kayaks. I love going down to Lake Travis and visiting the lake!! They have a water obstacle course that’s really fun and you can rent boats to tube etc. I love the Vibe in Austin! I have worked with A lot of great artist, engineers and influencers there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out Wavhouse studios owned By Chris Howard for helping me with studio time, beats and a nice comfortable place where I can record.
