We had the good fortune of connecting with David McGuffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I used to be all about work, work, work. I was in the restaurant industry as a Chef, Sommelier and an Owner. a short week was 60 hours. I got into the industry that I’m in now because the hours our flexible. It allows me to go on vacation and not feel guilty that the business is going to fall apart because I’m not there. It took me awhile to get there though. Today, when I work it gets 110% of me because I do have balance now. Back in the restaurant days getting 80% of me was a great day but that’s because of being pulled in so many different directions and not having any balance. Being constantly worn out and using your off day to catch up on sleep. I will say it’s nice to be able to go out with friends these day and have friends outside of my industry.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own Space City Payments. We are a Merchant Services broker. We have 7 companies we actively represent so we can find the right technology at competitive rates for our clients business. Whether it’s a mobile reader for the owner out in the field to a counter top machine or full scale Point of Sale system for multi location restaurant we have solutions. We even do virtual terminals with invoicing features, eCommerce gateways, and QuickBooks integrations.

What sets us apart is we take an active interest in our clients success. If they aren’t successful then neither are we. Our clients become our friends as well and we love supporting them.

The biggest challenge we try to overcome is getting business owners to realize it’s not always about rate. Junk fees play a big part in processing as well. I recently received a merchants statement that had over $500 in junk fees. They had a great rate but the junk fees were killing them. But business owners would rather “Dance with the devil they know than the one they don’t”

Also, when was the last time the guy at the bank called or stopped by to check on you or the person at Square. Have they recommended your business to their friends? Family? Circle of Influence? 99.9% NOT!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My Girlfriend and I love to go to concerts. So live music at the Cynthia Mitchell Pavillion, Dosey Doe, Main Street Crossing in Tomball, or at the House of Blues. We also love BBQ. So 3rd Coast and Tejas are a must. I’m also a sports nut so either Texans game or an Astros game. If we have a couple days left then head down to Galveston for some beach therapy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Too Many to mention it seems like… Mentor: Jonathan Young – VP of Sales at PayBright. Always there to answer a question when I have them.
Group: There are two. 1st is Inspired Leaders. Andy and Elizabeth Greever started this group 6 years ago. We meet once a month on the 2nd Friday of the month and have a speaker that tells their story. It’s not just the good parts either. It’s the good, the bad, and the ugly. I always leave there feeling ready to take on the world. The 2nd group would be The Net. The Net is a business networking group that is more than just business owners. We’re family.
