We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamaica Booker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamaica, what principle do you value most?
The principle I value and honor most when it comes to the Perfectly Unique brand is authenticity. I try to make sure that I personally am coming across as my true and authentic self when I am promoting and engaging with my audience. It really stems from the “Like, Know, and Trust” factor. I want my customers to get to know the person they are purchasing from and to realize I am no different from them.
What should our readers know about your business?
It most definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. When I initially started my Perfectly Unique Boutique, I had just hit a rough patch in my life. I had recently just graduated from Grad School and I had no prospective job offers and to be honest, I didn’t have a job either. Trying to keep up with creativity, smiling, and running a business all while staying with friends was no easy task. But I was determined to make this thing work. Thankfully within the first year, I was able to obtain a full-time career, but that also led to financial security and me shelving my online store for a while. It wasn’t until I recently decided to give up the so-called security to chase my dreams that I focused back on my business. Then the pandemic hit and found myself tasked with having to rebrand my entire business from solely selling statement t-shirts to launching an entire clothing line. This would include curating unique clothing items, designing a new website, targeting a new audience, but it also allowed me the opportunity to live out my passion for pushing out self-confidence through fashion and style.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to come to visit here in Houston I most definitely would take her to eat at the Turkey Leg Hut. Their Cajun Bowl is a must-have! In addition to just eating I would want to show her some of the local murals down in East Downtown that truly represent the local culture here in Houston. For nightlife, we would swing by Grooves of Houston for great cocktails, music, and dancing.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful to have some awesome individuals in my corner. My parents have always been huge advocates of any of the endeavors I want to pursue. In addition, I have a handful of friends that are extremely supportive in the aspect of purchasing my apparel and getting others to as well. In the moments that I get down on myself for feeling like I am not going as hard as I should, my support circle is most certainly always there to remind me that I am doing an amazing job and to never give up.
