We had the good fortune of connecting with Jewels de Hoyos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jewels, what inspires you?
I was raised by my mother and grandma, these two have honestly inspired me the most throughout my life. Growing up with two single women as my examples they really unintentionally displayed what being a strong working woman should look like to me. I am also a mother myself now, being a mom definitely pushes me into leaning towards my best self as I hope to set the same strong example for my little one. So I would say draw inspiration by the women in my life as well as the metaphysical side of our existence,
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started this company three years ago when I was seeking services for myself and I realized Houston didn’t have an aura photographer. I remember thinking, we should have this why don’t we? It was definitely terifying to take that leap of faith and bet on myself by starting this company. There has been much trial and error as I there was no mentor I could learn from when I was just starting out. There have been days where I feel completely dumbfounded as the equipment I work with is 50 years old. Ive gotten to where I am today through trial and error, consistency, and most importantly support from my community. One of the lessons I am constantly trying to master is self discipline, while keeping new and creative ideas flowing in, and adulting.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting I would take them to eat in Chinatown as there’s not just delicious food but also a glimpse into a vibrant cultural enclave to experience. We would have to get matching tattoos at It Always Hurts downtown is a unique and memorable way to bond and create a lasting memento of our time together. Then, if the Houston weather permitted swimming at the Blue Lagoon in Huntsville would definitely make the list. And to wind down and retreat I would definitely try to take them to a drop in yoga class or to a botanical garden.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
