We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard Logan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Richard, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The biggest risk I took was delaying college to instead pursue a boxing career. I ended up leaving boxing when my trainer retired, which set me down a collegiate path I probably never would have due to the professors at the university then. But I can say I was a former pro athlete, and the sport taught me about what it is to succeed by dedicating yourself to a craft. That carried over to my professional career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work in viral research. We specialize in working on infectious diseases and genetic therapies. How I stumbled upon STEM is a story I’m proud of. When my boxing career was winding down, I went back to college to just become a fitness trainer. But one of my bio chem teachers got me interested in science, and introduced me to a new field that was emerging, and that was Bio technology. There wasn’t many Hispanic/African American (I am bi racial) in that field at that time, and we were encouraged to pursue that. I had to re dedicate myself in teaching myself hard concepts like Bio chem, and other Science fields to pursue this field.
The career I stumbled upon (and still part of) is thanks to COVID. I graduated with 5 degrees, and wanted to pursue neuro science after graduating working on autism research. But I graduated right before COVID hit, and the company offer I accepted was working in viral research. I’m proud to be working in a field that is using cutting edge technology in improving people’s care.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best part about Houston, there are so many things to do. From sporting events like the Astros (a must), Texans and Rockets, my favorite time of the year is Houston Rodeo. So I would always recommend them coming for the cook off just to say they been once. I would definitely take them to either Steak 48 or Eddie V’s, both restaurants I can’t recommend enough.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a lot of individuals who helped me achieve what I have a achieved. From my boxing trainer of may years, who goes by Pops, To my U of H college professors who convinced me into going into STEM field. But my biggest supporter that I would like to give a shout out to is my daughter, Bryelle. I wanted to show her what can happen if you pursue your dreams. She has seen me train in the boxing ring, and has seen me graduating college. Her encouragement was always the fire I need to complete my goals to make a better future for us.
The one book I can’t recommend enough that will change your life after reading, is the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I re read it once every year.
