We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Allison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, why did you pursue a creative career?
It sounds cliché but I didn’t really have a choice. Music is what I think about from the moment I wake up to when I lie in bed to sleep. It’s something I feel the need to do and I enjoy creating things out of nothing more than I can say. It allows me to express things that I, specifically, find interesting and beautiful. It allows me to create and network with others that share the same musical outlooks as me. And, it helps me to connect with others more so than anything else does.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think my main goal for everything I create is just to be honest. Whether that sets me apart or not, I don’t really know. But I do know that everything I release will be done to the best of my ability and will be an honest representation of my art. I’ve spent about 8 years in the Houston music scene and have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with some great friends, exciting new local acts, and national bands. But no, it is not easy. Sometimes you question if it’s even enjoyable. There’s a lot of sacrifice involved in building a project; sleep, eating, free time; it’s a full-time job outside of your full-time job. But, if it’s something you want to do, you will happily sacrifice. The main thing I try to remind myself is this: nothing matters. In the best way possible, nothing matters. Are you worried about that guitar part sounding too much like your favorite band? It doesn’t matter. Are you having trouble trying to figure out what rock sub-genre your new project fits in to? It doesn’t matter. Do you think your album isn’t as great as the your favorite album? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you do your best, be honest, then let it go for the world to hear.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start with a few trips to Moon Tower Inn for beers and burgers (get The Cheech) or head over to Ninfa’s on Navigation. One of my favorite spots in the city though, is a little square in Midtown. You can get some crazy good pizza at Homeslice or go to Tacos A Go-Go just around the corner. You can catch a show at Continental Club then slip across the street for a drink at Double Trouble, or eat at Winnie’s and stop in to Sig’s Lagoon record store, there is just so much to love in that block.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a few people that have helped me in my journey but I have to shout out two people in particular.
First would be my beautiful wife, Taylor Allison (@The_Goddess_Sessions). I couldn’t ask for a better partner in life than her. She is kind, supportive, thoughtful, and challenges me to be a better person. I have done a lot of growing just from her being in my life and plan to do much more as time goes on. She is also a very talented photographer so being married to such a creative is very inspiring and helps with my creative processes.
I’d also like to shout out my music/writing partner (and cousin) Tyler McMahon (@TheWTM). Ty and I have been creating since we were very young and he is a big influence on, not only my musical career, but my life as a whole. There are very few people that I trust to create with and Ty has been my right hand man for multiple projects and albums.
