We had the good fortune of connecting with Amanda Gray MSN, APRN, FNP-C, CANS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amanda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Watching both of my parents be entrepreneurs all of my life, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I feel like it’s in my blood haha. I really wanted to create a personable aesthetic space that emphasizes renewing and not augmenting. REN is short for renewal, but we decided to incorporate an acronym – Real, Elegant, and Natural aesthetic treatments. In aesthetics, unfortunately there is a lot of “smoke and mirrors” due to social media and lack of education. Elegant and Natural because I feel very passionate that anyone can have injectables but still look natural. Unfortunately, as a professional I am constantly myth busting. The vast majority of individuals are fearful to injectables because they have seen individuals who have not only had bad work but too much of it. I’m here to break that stigma.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My first job out of nursing school was working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). I absolutely loved it, but I wasn’t a fan of the shift schedules and I knew I wanted to start a family soon, so I decided to transition out of the hospital. I started working for a plastic surgeon where I was introduced to the aesthetic realm where I discovered my interest in beauty and science can be successfully combined. Getting into the aesthetic industry is very competitive but I was lucky to had known someone to help me get my foot in the door. I’d like to say from there it was easy to get where I am now, but it wasn’t. In this industry, you constantly have to have a hunger for learning because the science and research is always changing and it is very competitive. I have learned so much the past 6 years and proud of the progress I have made but I am still learning every day. When people hear about REN Aesthetics, I want people to know that you absolutely can receive a safe, effective, and natural looking aesthetic treatment while keeping your unique identity. I also want people to know that just because someone receives an aesthetic treatment does not mean they are vain or insecure. Everyone has different forms of self-expression and things they do to increase their confidence. Ultimately, how one feels when they look in the mirror is what’s important.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh wow, this is a hard one because there are so many awesome places in Houston. REN Aesthetics is located off of Riley Fuzzel in a suburban area, so there are a lot of family-friendly places around. Within the same parking lot, there’s a Regal Cinema movie theatre and a Tapas Restaurant. There are also other family-friendly areas like CityPlace, Hughes Landing, and Market Street, all about 15-30 minutes from REN.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Like I said, my parents were a huge positive influence on me so I look to them for mentorship and guidance because they both started their businesses from the ground up and became widely successful. Thankfully, I have an amazing husband who has always supported me and my dreams. I also have amazing mentors like my Medical Director, Joel Kneitz, and his wife, Flor Kneitz who align with my morals as always putting the patient and their safety first. I have a large support system that I couldn’t be more thankful for.
