We had the good fortune of connecting with Taya Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Sound House Therapy came by way of the pandemic. I was actually pretty content working at a non-profit counseling agency and then everything changed when the pandemic hit and it was going to be around for quite awhile. In June of 2020 I decided I needed to shift perspective and look at what having my own private practice might look like and so began to framework for launching Sound House Therapy.
What should our readers know about your business?
Sound House Therapy’s primary focus is to help people build their house on rock! Using the Gottman Method’s Sound Relationship House Theory and the bible verse Matthew 7:25 the goal is to help people develop the skills to overcome life’s obstacles by creating a strong foundation. Most of us can say that at some point in our lives we’ve experienced either a mini or a major traumatic event that fractured our foundation-our sense of self. For me it began with understanding that my adoption was trauma. I believe that my lived experience as an adoptee has shaped how I show up in the therapy room.
Today I am most excited to get to do what I do as a business owner and navigate the other rooms I want to show up in. I believe having worked in the non-profit sector from 2007-2020 gave me the foundation I needed to understand the ins and outs of being a therapist. Now I am learning the ins and outs of being a business owner and it definitely has its bumps in the road.
What has helped the most in managing the challenges is staying connected with others who are doing this and creating community because being a solopreneur can be isolating. The biggest lesson I’ve learned so far is how valuable it is to create systems in your work. For example, having a biller, having an accountant, having days off…all of these systems support me in being able to show up in each hour with a client fully present.
My goal now is to dive deeper into the world of being an adoption competent therapist. My desire is to offer therapy support for other adult adoptees and to expand on my blog Dear Birthmom. Sharing more content through my blog and podcast I Found Her will hopefully allow others to find a place whereby their foundation gets stronger and they are able to create their own narrative of a Sound House!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston has lots to do so I think there’s something for everybody! Let’s start with some of my favorite things to do. Checking out Miller Outdoor Theatre for a fun evening out and spending time at Hermann Park during the day will allow someone to engage in one of the best spots in the city for food and fun. Heading over to Discovery Green will get you another great day in the city to explore. Also with the updated Memorial Park you can do a trail, run/walk or bike and find a great place to get coffee along the bayou. As you can see most of my favorite things to do involve being outdoors.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to Nicole Okwoche, LCSW and CEO of Dynamik Transformations, LLC. Spending time together over the past 4 years has been a time for us to connect and encourage each other in our entrepreneurial pursuits. In addition I’d like to give a shoutout to Dawn Lawless, Founder of Counseling Connections for Change, LLC. As my supervisor she saw the potential in me and supported me as I shifted my perspective towards my private practice. Also, I would like to give a shoutout to an amazing podcast I listen to weekly named The Next Right Thing with Emily P. Freeman. This podcast really helps me to develop wisdom and discernment in my daily decisions. Oh and along with that I can’t leave out another organization that has truly impacted me over the last 3 years which is Gospel in Life with Dr. Timothy Keller. HIs daily sermons have helped me immensely in my faith.
