We had the good fortune of connecting with Pam Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pam, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
As an artist, the habits that have helped me succeed are rooted in consistency and showing up to the creative process, even when inspiration isn’t flowing. One of the most important practices for me is maintaining a regular studio routine. Whether I’m feeling inspired or not, I make it a point to create, experiment, and explore new ideas every day. This helps build momentum and keeps my skills sharp.

Another habit is committing to my creative goals, no matter how long they may take to develop. Patience and persistence in refining my work have been key, especially when facing creative blocks or uncertainty. By showing up consistently, I allow space for ideas to evolve naturally, which has led to breakthroughs in my art over time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m very excited about my latest series which incorporates fantasy. What sets my work apart is the intersection of storytelling and abstract figures. I try to capture not just a visual moment but an emotional one. The deliberate choice to render faces abstractly encourages viewers to actively engage, prompting them to unearth their unique interpretations within the artwork.

I’m proud of the journey that has brought me to the point where my work resonates with others, especially when they share personal connections to a piece. I’m excited about continuing to evolve as an artist, finding new ways to express complex emotions and ideas through my work, and engaging with new audiences.

The road hasn’t been easy—there have been moments of doubt and uncertainty—but each challenge has shaped me into a stronger, more deliberate artist. My growth is the result of constant learning and being open to new ideas and techniques.

The biggest challenges have been balancing my creative process with the business side of being an artist, especially early on. I learned to stay true to my vision while also adapting to the realities of selling and promoting my work. Surrounding myself with supportive people, especially my family and friends, has helped me navigate the tough times.

I want the world to know that my work is about more than just painting—it’s about creating connections through storytelling and emotion. My brand reflects a commitment to authenticity, passion, and continuous growth. I hope that through my art, people can find something that resonates with them on a personal level, whether it’s a sense of empowerment or a cozy feeling of home.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting Springfield, I’d want to give them a true taste of the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and community. Here’s what I’d plan:

A Historical Welcome
We’d start with a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to immerse ourselves in Lincoln’s legacy. Springfield is proud of its connection to Lincoln, and you can feel his presence everywhere. For lunch, we’d grab a cozy meal at Incredibly Delicious, a local bakery housed in a beautiful historic home.

In the afternoon, we’d stroll through Washington Park (which is close to my house) to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and maybe chat with some of the local dog walkers. Dinner would be at Maldaner’s, one of the oldest restaurants in town, where we’d enjoy some farm-to-table dishes in a historic setting.

Art and Local Flavor
We’d start with breakfast at Wm. Van’s Coffee House, located in another of Springfield’s historic buildings. Afterward, we’d visit the Springfield Art Association to explore exhibits of local artists (like me!), then head over to the nearby Edwards Place Historic Home for a tour that highlights Springfield’s 19th-century history.

In the evening, we’d stop by Obed & Isaac’s Microbrewery for craft beer and pub fare, followed by a game of bocce in their outdoor courtyard.

Exploring Local History
We’d kick off with a trip to Lincoln’s Home National Historic Site to explore the preserved neighborhood and take a guided tour. In the afternoon, we’d visit Oak Ridge Cemetery to pay our respects at Lincoln’s Tomb. The cemetery itself is a serene place for reflection. Afterward, we’d grab lunch at Finley’s Tap House, where I’d introduce my friend to the famous horseshoe sandwich, a Springfield original.

Outdoor History and More Art!
We’d start the day with a peaceful morning at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site near Petersburg, just a 30-minute drive from Springfield.

New Salem is a beautifully restored 1830s village where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked as a young man. We’d take a leisurely walk through the recreated pioneer village, learning about Lincoln’s early life and the people who shaped his journey. It’s like stepping back in time, surrounded by log cabins, working craftsmen, and costumed interpreters who bring history to life.

Afterward, we’d explore Petersburg, a charming small town known for its picturesque streets and antique shops, as well as Perspectives Art Gallery, where my work is exhibited. We’d stop by Hand of Fate Brewing Company for a relaxing drink or light snack before heading back to Springfield for a pizza at Sapori Pizzeria and Italian Market.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to Toni Lowenthal at Perspectives Art Gallery (@perspectives_art_gallery) for reintroducing me into the world of fantasy novels—one of my favorite genres and now a huge inspiration for my paintings! Toni, you’re not only a wonderful friend and constant source of encouragement but also an amazing gallery owner who works tirelessly to sell my paintings. Thank you for everything you do!
