We had the good fortune of connecting with Shatoya Kamia Aka “mia” and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shatoya, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
One of the most significant lessons my career has taught me is the importance of resilience and adaptability. In both my personal life and professional endeavors, I’ve faced numerous challenges, from transitioning into single motherhood while managing a burgeoning career, to shifting my focus entirely towards entrepreneurship. Each of these challenges has underscored the need to remain flexible and proactive in the face of change.

In the business world, especially, adaptability isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving. It means being open to new opportunities and ready to pivot when certain paths prove less fruitful. This lesson was crystallized when I moved to Dallas for a new job opportunity, stepping bravely into a role that would later pave the way for greater achievements in my entrepreneurial pursuits. The willingness to adapt—whether it’s in adopting new technologies, exploring new markets, or adjusting business strategies—has been pivotal.

Additionally, resilience has taught me that setbacks are not endpoints but stepping stones. After the end of a significant personal relationship, I redirected my focus towards building a stable and flourishing life for my children and myself. This included not just sustaining but also expanding my business ventures, which have taught me that persistence, coupled with a positive mindset, can overcome the most daunting obstacles.

This combination of resilience and adaptability has not only shaped my career but also driven the success of my businesses, teaching me that the most profound growth often comes from navigating through adversity.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My professional journey is characterized by a blend of financial strategy, human resources, and honestly learning through so many life experiences. What sets me apart is my holistic approach to entrepreneurship—not only am I involved in managing properties, but I also focus on empowering individuals through financial education and business support.

I am most proud of how I have leveraged my skills to help others launch their own businesses and improve their financial health. My journey wasn’t easy; it involved navigating the complexities of single motherhood while building a career and later, managing multiple businesses. The challenges were numerous, from balancing work and home life to the financial risks of entrepreneurship. However, my resilience, learned from my early life experiences and my passion for helping others have been my guiding lights.

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is the importance of adaptability and proactive planning. In business, as in life, circumstances change rapidly, and success often depends on one’s ability to pivot and embrace new strategies.

I want the world to know that my story is one of overcoming obstacles through perseverance and a deep-seated desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Each step in my career has been geared towards not just personal success, but also enabling others to achieve their own goals and dreams.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I like laid-back vibes and hidden gems. We’d start with an easy-going day at Texas LIVE, where we can chill and watch a game on the massive TVs, and maybe even dare to ride the mechanical bull. Then, we’d switch to relaxation mode at the Hilton Anatole, lounging by the adult-only pool with swim up bar that feels like a mini tropical getaway.

We’d definitely need to check out the iconic Eye at The Joule downtown—it’s such a cool spot for some quirky photos. And to cap off a perfect Sunday, we’d hit up Sambuca in Addison or Izkina in Deep Ellum for some lively day party vibes, with great music and brunch from Kajun Konnection Kitchen. It’s all about music, good times and great tunes!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my parents, who have been fundamental in shaping the person and entrepreneur I am today. My father taught me the value of hard work and perseverance, and my mother instilled in me the importance of financial wisdom and “doing unto others…” . Their lessons have been my guiding light. I would also like to recognize my children, who inspire me every day to be the best version of myself and to create a legacy they can be proud of. Their support and belief in my journey mean the world to me.
