We had the good fortune of connecting with John Quinonez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
It is a pleasure to be here, so thank you for having me.
There is a well-known adage that “consistency is key.” Every day presents a fresh opportunity for achievement, recovery, and progress in the desired direction. I remind myself that modest steps and building blocks are what contribute to the broader picture in what I want to do, whether it’s enhancing my well-being or my career. Some days, you may have more time to work on or practice what you want to be successful in because, in today’s society, more is expected of us, and life isn’t always planned or ideal. Practice what you want to be successful at every day, even if it’s only for a small period of time, because that is what consistency entails.
We genuinely have an infinite supply of information at our fingers in the modern world. The market of today is harsh and fiercely competitive. From relationships to establishing your own business. Continue to study, investigate, and adjust to shifting market conditions. Be valuable instead of being needy in all that you do. Be distinct, be unique, and ultimately, just be you. You will attract everything that you desire seeing as the aura you have will be visible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Because of my unusual line of work, I’ve been able to travel to many places and experience different cultures, learning languages, indulging throughout local cuisine, adopting local customs, and forming enduring friendships. Part of my art consists of photography everyday scenes across the globe. I like to document life’s little moments from an unfamiliar, foreign angle, occasionally sharing my own viewpoint.
The other aspect of my art is music production, which involves creating instrumental music tracks heavily influenced by Metro Boomin (Leland Tyler Wayne) and Wheezy Outta Here (Wesley Tyler Glass). These producers create music with a distinct, simple yet complex structure. Since my last album was released in March 2023 while working in Poland, I have taken a brief hiatus from releasing music after moving to Japan. Now, I feel prepared and plan to release new music in the spring of 2025.
In both works of art, I learn, improve, experiment, and remain unique when creating new work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
After more than a year in Tokyo, I believe I’ve only scratched the surface of what there is to do and see.
In addition to my regular job, I work part-time at SOMSOC Gallery in Tokyo (Harajuku) on photography art exhibitions. This one-of-a-kind and contemporary gallery brings together a variety of artists and art forms to showcase their work. With paintings, photographs, sculptures, performances, music, and one-of-a-kind collaborative showcases, this gallery is truly unique and stands out from other modern art galleries. Artists from all across the world display and sell their work here, along with one-of-a-kind original design merchandise. After working here for a year, I am proud to be a part of the SOMSOC Family and to be able to help showcase the gallery while also making lasting friendships.
I enjoy going to the beach in Fujisawa, a coastal town in the southern Tokyo metro area. The town provides a small town atmosphere that is close knit but open, as well as a festival atmosphere.
Roppongi, is a great area for going out and enjoying a night on the town.
Meiji-jingumae (Harajuku) is a shopping and dining destination with a wide range of traditional and foreign cuisines. The district is home to a variety of clothing, accessory, and sports shops, ranging from casual to high-end brands, as well as other unique retailers and galleries.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If there is one individual who has helped, it is my former sound engineer professor. Jon McDonell, aka Mac. He has supported me during my prosperous periods and guided me through new experiences and life in general. Mac has also assisted me and served as a mentor at difficult moments in my life.
From his early years, Mac has led a variety of lifestyles. He has had a variety of jobs, seen the globe, and collaborated with a wide range of people, including high-ranking businesspeople and artists. In a unique sense, I see and feel that I am on a journey parallel to his but still establishing my personal path of experiences. I will be eternally grateful for having Mac as a professor, mentor, and friend. I’m grateful for everything, Thank you Mac.
