We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcey Dauterive and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcey, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The single most important decision that contributed to my success was employing my family. Once I became very successful and quite busy, I realized that I could not do this alone. My business partner Alex and I decided that giving our children the keys to success at such an early age would change the trajectory of our business and it has paid off! Not only do we have the main office of Plus More and Some Tax Services, LLC, our three older children Elijah, Marlon, Jr. and Elise have branched out and opened their own tax businesses. This alone has been such a powerful and diverse move for our family and the communities that we serve.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Plus More and Some Tax Services, LLC offers a variety of services including personal and small business tax preparation, corporate and partnership tax preparation, payroll services, bookkeeping services, notary, life insurance, business credit and funding, tax planning, and tax debt resolution. Our offices are open year around to provide support for all of our current and future clients. Our business thrives on good communication and providing education to our clients. I am proud to say that we have a great referral program in which always brings in new clients and retains our past clients. In business, you have to have tough skin and remove all emotions so that your actions are strategically aligned. I have had some hard battles while being in business from being physically ill all the way to being involved in a civil lawsuit which has been resolved. During those times, you just want to throw in the towel, but I am NOT A QUITTER! I have used all of those trial
and tribulations as fuel to keep going and reach different levels of success.
I am a firm believer in the saying “Delayed does not mean denied.” I was a young mother at the age of 16, three children by the age of 19, unmarried, and I have been able to accomplish my goal of becoming a registered nurse and running multiple successful businesses. You have to keep pressing to find your way even when everything seems dark. It can’t rain forever!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Welcome to HTOWN BABY!! Our first day, I would have a spa day set up because we all need to relax after traveling- at the Houstonian Trellis Spa then we would hang and catch a vibe at Pappadeaux’s for some good ole seafood and drinks. Our next spot to hit would be Top Golf for some fun and laughs with small bites and drinks. During the following day, we would visit Parkerz for the shrimp and sliders- Yum Yum! That night, we would catch the Address for R&B night- it’s a vibe! Our next stop would be Grace’s for some good old soul food. After all devouring all of that good food, we would visit the Galleria to walk and splurge on some designer items from Prada, Chanel, and LV. Our night cap would be a visit to Kiss for the $5 lamb chops and lemon drops! We would visit the Houston Museum of African American culture for an educational day and view of beautiful art work. While downtown, we would ride scooters and enjoy the night life. The finale would be brunch at Phil and Derek’s and to finish the night, Face’s Nightclub in third ward.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to first give all praises to God! I owe him all the glory for without him, I would not be in this position today. Next I would like to thank my family- Alex- my business partner for always pushing and believing in me, when I doubted myself: my children- Elijah, Marlon, Jr., Elise, and Barack for always being understanding and supportive for any goals I set out to reach- Yeah I really love my children: To my Grandparents and Mom- thank you all for all the advice and support, teaching me life lessons along the way. I can honestly say, all of my shortcomings, I won’t say failures, have paved the way for me to become the woman I am today.
