We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Randi Blackmon Likely and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Randi, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
When it comes to chiropractic care, I believe that outsiders are unaware of the amount of knowledge chiropractors have as well as that each chiropractor typically has a different way of practicing in their office. In chiropractic school, we took a total of 223 credit hours and averaged around 28 credit hours of class work during trimesters 1-8. There are 10 total trimesters of chiropractic school, but trimesters 9 and 10 were solely clinic based. The amount of credit hours we took comprised of classes that ranged from basic sciences like Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Pathology, and Microbiology to clinic based classes like Physical Examination, Orthopedics, and Physical Rehabilitation. Our classwork was designed to teach us how to properly identify if a patient is dealing with a neuro-musculoskeletal problem or a problem arising from something outside of our scope of practice, like kidney stones. I always tell people that if they are dealing with muscle, tendon, or ligament pain, then I can help them; however, not every chiropractor practices the same way that I do. Some chiropractors only adjust, some chiropractors only focus on nutrition, and some chiropractors focus on many different specialties, like me.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Backed by Blackmon is a chiropractic, sports therapy, and wellness clinic located in Clear Lake City, Texas. We are an evidence-based office, which means that our methods of treatment are supported by research. What sets Backed by Blackmon apart from others is that I have many specialties; therefore, I am equipped to treat the entire family from ages 0-100. I have completed post-graduate training in pediatric chiropractic care, sports rehabilitation and performance, exercise prescription, surgery prevention, and much more.
While I knew I was supposed to open up Backed by Blackmon right after graduation, the journey to opening up the clinic was far from easy. There was a lot about owning a practice that I simply did not know and had to learn along the way. Thankfully, I had a great network of doctors that were available to answer any and every question I had.
The biggest lesson I have learned while owning my practice would be the importance of persistence. There are days where I am told no more times than I am told yes, but learning to work through every denial has made me a better doctor.
I want the world to know that I entered this field to help patients achieve the goals and quality of health that they envision for their life. I do not treat symptoms; rather, I go after the root cause and dysfunction that is causing unwanted symptoms like pain and discomfort. This approach allows me to help patients achieve overall wellness, which can aid in adding healthy years to their lives. I care for all of my patients as if they were my immediate family and value the power of empathy. When patients visit my clinic, they can rest and know that their health is backed by many people that care for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many fun things to do in Houston. I always tell people that it is a great city to eat and have fun in. When it comes to eating, my favorite restaurant recommendations are Taste of Texas, Pappadeaux’s, and Lupe Tortilla. In Houston, we have a phenomenal museum district; therefore, I always recommend a fun museum day. I always like to plan a Galveston day which would include going shopping on The Strand, walking down the sea wall, eating at The Spot, and enjoying amusement park rides at Pleasure Pier.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are three people in my life that I would like to recognize for their never-ending love and support that they have poured into my life over the years, my parents and my husband, Matthew. My parents have always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, and they have both sacrificed so much to make sure that I could. They are the reason I decided to name my practice “Backed by Blackmon”. My entire practice is backed by all of the support they have given me throughout each phase of my academic career and during my time in practice.
My husband, Matthew, and I met when we were freshmen in college; therefore, he has been by my side through the entire journey. Even when I had to start chiropractic school and could not talk to him throughout the week because of classwork, he continued to support me and encourage me to keep pressing on towards my goals. When I decided to start a practice right out of school, he took on any and every job to support us financially.
I wholeheartedly believe that I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for those three.
