Meet Gabe Wells | Powerlifting Coach, Nutritionist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabe Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabe, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Beaumont, Texas born and raised on a small farm in the city limits. Never been a stranger to working hard and just being an overall decent person. Educationally, my background is in Nutrition Science and I hold a few certifications in fitness/strength training. I’ve worked for the State of Texas in mental health as a clinical nutritionist and health educator as well as a competitive powerlifter and powerlifting coach for 15 years. I was raised by my mother, grandmother and aunt; all of whom were very strong hard working women in their respective fields. I truly believe my faith in God and my upbringing have played a big role in my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I feel what makes me stand out as a powerlifting coach is my ability to figure out what drives my athlete individually and pull it out of them. I use my experience in this sport from the past 15years as a baseboard, but I always remind my athletes that even though it gets hard the rewards get better as you progress. I’m always willing to share the knowledge that I have whether through books or personal experience.
One of the biggest challenges I faced in powerlifting was that were not many crews training near me. Most were further north or I simply didn’t know about them, so I created GT Barbell in 2012 and we expanded from there! Numerous World, National and State Record holders have been apart of this team and now we are on the verge of expanding again, rebranding ourselves along with Relentless Power Systems to reach outside of Texas.
None of this has been easy, there will be negative energy directed towards you and what you’re trying to do or those who get close to you just to see what you can do for them. I’ve learned that while I have a heart to help I still have to be mindful of those who aren’t supportive.
Be on the lookout for the merger of our teams….The Syndicate!!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Eat: 1701 BBQ, Redbird BBQ, any thing BBQ or Hit up POUR09. There’s always something going on and my guy Tony pops in with his own style of BBQ! SupaDave will keep the laughs rolling and the bartenders will keep the drinks flowing! You literally could hang out there every night and have a different experience.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
God first and foremost! My wife Barbara, my mother; Virgie, my teams: The Syndicate (GT Barbell and Relentless Power Systems), Fit Lab Foundation, Marietta Barbell, all our sponsors and anyone else who’s had a hand in this amazing journey (so many to name but they most certainly know who they are!)
