We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole/ Ashlyn/ Allysa Shelton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole/ Ashlyn/ Allysa, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Our journey began 20 years ago when my sister and I were 3 and 6 years old. Our mother, Nicole, was in a well-known cosmetic company for 12 years. She was a top earner in the company, earning many cars, several awards, and tons of money. Ultimately, my sister and I accompanied her to all of her makeover events & parties, which helped us learn the fundamentals of business & the basics of makeup at a young age. Little did we know that once my sister, Ashlyn, turned 18 years old, that she would receive the vision through a school assignment of us beginning our own cosmetic brand, Glam Life Cosmetics. Glam Life Cosmetics was born in 2018. We even started our own cosmetic studio called The Glam Studio where we came across hundreds of ladies every month offering free makeovers & teaching them hands on how to apply the basics of makeup. The demand became too overwhelming and we could not keep up with the supply. We fought hard but just did not have enough capital to keep it afloat. Years later, in 2022, we relocated from Louisiana to Texas to relaunch Glam Life Cosmetics, now named Glam Life Beauty Bar. We now have a kiosk in The Willowbrook Mall in Houston, TX where we see thousands of customers per month and are open 7 days per week. We offer full face glams, 1 on 1 makeup classes, and we also sell our own brand of cosmetics. We aim to empower our customers to embrace their unique beauty and shine brightly. At Glam Life Beauty Bar, we believe that beauty has the power to enhance confidence and transform lives. We now understand our journey and how it has shaped us all to be experienced and ready for all that’s to come.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Glam Life has several qualities that set us apart from our competition. Those qualities are:

1. We are a Black-Owned Business: Our beauty bar being black-owned attracts customers who are specifically looking to support black-owned businesses, especially those who value diversity and inclusion.

2. We are a Mother-Daughter Owned brand: Our mother-daughter ownership adds a personal and familial touch, which resonates with customers looking for a more intimate and personalized service experience.

3. We have a strong connection with the community: As a local beauty bar, we have a strong connection to the community, offering personalized services and understanding the specific needs and preferences of our local clientele.

Thus far, Glam Life has:

•Successfully relocated the business and expanded to Houston, Texas.

•We have successfully rebranded our business and product line.

•We have placed in the top 100 black owned businesses for the Beyonce Beygood Foundation.

•We have been recognized as recipients of the Yummie O Women In Business Grant

•We have rebuilt our entire customer base from the ground up.

•Our customer retention, return rate, and revenue has increased since we’ve launched.

When faced with challenges, first, we evaluate the issue. Next, we evaluate what we could have done differently to prevent the challenge from occurring. Lastly, we evaluate what we can do to fix the challenge and grow from it. Change and challenges are inevitable and we have learned that we can’t only focus on the present, but we must always focus on the future to prevent any future challenges from arising. At Glam Life Beauty Bar, our mission is to empower our community by celebrating beauty in all its forms. We strive to provide personalized, high-quality beauty services and products that cater to the diverse needs of our clients, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and beautiful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we had a friend visiting the city of Houston, a week in the life with Glam Life would be visiting the following places:

Willowbrook Mall: Of course, we have to show them where the #1 beauty bar is located at in Houston, which would be Glam Life!

Steak 48: This restaurant embodies high class & upscale vibes. Their food is also at the top of our list!

Yardhouse: We love eating here when we are looking for a lowkey restaurant with delicious food! Not only that, it’s located in the middle of a thoughtfully planned shopping center!

Regal 4DX Theater: For entertainment, we love visiting here as a family! They offer 4DX movies that includes motion enabled chairs, 3D, and wing, fog, and rain effects!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A person that we would love to shoutout would be our dad, Tim. He works hard behind the scenes and helps us daily to grow our customer base rapidly. He opens and closes our business for us every single day. Also, he hands out flyers all day long which turns into sales and new clients for Glam Life!
