We had the good fortune of connecting with Donovan And Rebecca and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Donovan and Rebecca, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
We both grew up in Europe, and were influenced by entertainment at a very young age. Rebecca’s father was from London, and became an antiques dealer with a flair for the theatrical. He always encouraged his 2 daughters to explore their creative side, going so far as to create a ballet school inside their home.

My father spent most of his career working as an entertainer, and I grew up around some of the most iconic cabarets in Paris. When we met, we were rehearsing in NY for a cruise ship contract, she as a dancer, and I as a singer. We fell in love and decided to find a way to be together on stage as well as off. So, we taught ourselves partner acrobatics, and then toured the world with our act for the next two decades.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Coming from a musical theatre background, several years into our relationship, Rebecca and I decided to reinvent ourselves as an acrobatic duo. Starting that level of physicality so late (I was 29 at the time) was incredibly difficult, and we faced huge criticism from our piers. We eventually found our own unique way of interpreting classic poses, and combined that with our love for song and dance to create a full show. As such, we toured the world with our act for over two decades, appearing on several tv shows internationally, and setting 7 Guinness World Records in the process.
We now own and operate a circus speakeasy wine bar in the Houston metropolitan area, where we serve fine wines, authentic Belgian beers, and perform weekly along side other guest artists.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
To be honest, for the past 3 years, we have been so concentrated on remodeling this old 1930s building in order to change it from a garage to a beautiful speakeasy & wine bar that, we haven’t really had time to explore this incredibly diverse city.

A visit to the heights, and its vibrant night life would certainly be a must. Kemah, and its boardwalk is quite an attraction, and further downstream, Galveston definitely has its charm.

Of course, we would have to recommend a certain speakeasy on a Saturday night, for a truly unique experience. Fine wines, champagnes, authentic Belgian beers, charcuterie boards, and spectacular entertainment…

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Both of our parents were hugely supportive of our artistic endeavors. Without their support and encouragement, neither of us might have undertaken the huge challenges we faced, starting an acrobatic act so late in life.
