We had the good fortune of connecting with Rida Ashrafi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rida, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
What started as a small COVID hobby quickly turned into a full fledged business. I have always loved candles, so one day i thought- why not make my own? I began experimenting at home, and my experiments soon turned into unique creations that friends and family loved, eventually growing in Khushbu Candles. I named it khushbu Candles because ‘Khushbu’ means ‘scent’ in Urdu. It’s my way of blending creativity with culture in every candle I make!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Khushbu Candles is built on creativity, detail, and personal touch. We dry all of our florals in house and hand top each candle with dried flowers, making each candle unique. Our candles are completely customizable- we create party favors for any event, and even business marketing candles for brands looking to leave a lasting impression. Over the past 5 years, we have shipped to 27 states, which still amazes me. This journey has pushed me far out of my comfort zone, introduced me to incredible people, and taught me the value of connection through a product made with love. Each candle carries a story, one of culture, craft, and community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week with my bestie in Houston would start with a morning Pilates class at The Well, followed by an iced latte from Two Tone Coffee (my absolute favorite)! Of course, we’d need a shopping day at The Galleria or maybe some outlet malls. Dinner in Houston is always exciting because the options are endless. I actually keep a running list of restaurants in my phone that I try to check off every so often. I love all cuisines, but a staple in my family is Aga’s, our go-to Indo-Pak spot that never disappoints!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The most important person behind the success of Khushbu Candles has been my mom’s unwavering support. Even on days when she is exhausted from her own responsibilities, she still finds the energy to help me pour candles, package orders, and keep things running smoothly. She reminds me why I started- because love and hard work are the heart of every candle poured and packaged!
