Stories, Lessons & Insights

We were fortunate to catch up with some brilliant artists, creatives and entrepreneurs from throughout the Houston area and they share the wisdom with us below.

One of the most important habits that has helped me succeed is taking the time to genuinely connect with each person in my chair—their energy, their story, and how they want to feel in their skin. It’s not just about enhancing their outer beauty, but about understanding how they want to feel when they walk out the door. Another habit I never compromise on is my attention to detail. I truly believe the small touches throughout the makeup application process have a huge impact on the final result. Read More>>

I define success by not only what I can do for myself but what I can do for others. Of course I would like to live comfortably and give my kids the life they deserve, but really being able to be a vessel in my community to people who were in my situation. Read More>>

I believe the difference between whether to keep going or to give up comes down to purpose and peace. If something still excites me at my core—even if it’s hard, even if it’s slow—that’s usually a sign to keep going. Progress doesn’t always show up as quick wins, sometimes it’s growth, resilience, and lessons learned along the way. Read More>>

It is my hope that I have supported my children not only to be proud of who they each are as individuals with unique perspectives and qualities, but to figure out how to bring these aspects to support and work within the communities they engage with. Read More>>

The most important factor behind my success and the success of Coco’s Creations has been my support system and my faith. I don’t do this alone. My grandmother gave me the foundation; teaching me that food is more than just a meal, it’s a way to love people. My mom, Joyce has been my rock and constant to strengthen my faith and remind me of what God can do if we just believe. My husband, Lonnie, is the steady hand that keeps me balanced when I’m juggling 10 pots and pans (literally). And my daughters Kennedy and Leah keep me motivated to push harder because they’re watching me chase this dream. Read More>>

The most important factor behind my success has been consistency, fueled by my passion for music and my work in law and consulting. As a DJ, that consistency means practicing regularly, staying creative with my mixes, keeping an ear out for new sounds, and approaching the craft as a student. As an attorney and entrepreneur, it shows up in how I build relationships, stay disciplined in my work, and continue learning to better serve the people and organizations I work with. At the heart of both careers is my love for growth and my drive to keep pushing forward. I consider myself a hustler, which to me means showing up every day, building on what I know, and never losing the passion that started it all. Read More>>

My long-term goal is to become a professional touring artist whose music resonates with people across cultures and makes a lasting impact. I want my songs to not only entertain but also connect emotionally, inspire, and create meaningful experiences for listeners. At the same time, I aim to achieve recognition through awards and accomplishments that reflect the quality and reach of my artistry. Ultimately, I want to build a career that combines global touring, professional success, and genuine impact on people’s lives. Read More>>

I heard a quote growing up that stuck with me, and it was “Do what you love, and the money will follow”. I’ve always loved the arts or anything creative and I knew that even if I did go the traditional route, I would still want to embrace my creative side. I used to always say I wanted to be a singer, backup dancer, actress, literally anything creative you can think of. I’m grateful social media has given me the flexibility and chance to do that while still being a student! Read More>>

I think there is always going to be a bit of a struggle between work life and personal life and finding balance between the two. I have set rules for myself which I’ve been following for quite some time now. Read More>>

In the mental health field, a work-life balance is critical. I help clients who have experienced significant traumas in their lives, and this can take a toll. I need to strike a balance between work life, maintaining my physical health, and family time. One of the most significant ways I create this balance is by getting out of town to create some separation between my career and my family time. My family enjoys anything outdoors, and we try to make the most of it whenever possible. While maintaining this balance can take work, it’s the only way I can truly show up for my clients.
