We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Serrano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erica, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
At Your Side Home Care supports the community by going beyond hands-on care and investing deeply in education, advocacy, and outreach — particularly in Dementia and Parkinson’s care.

This work is deeply important to our local community in The Woodlands, where many families are navigating aging, cognitive decline, and chronic neurological conditions while trying to keep loved ones safely at home. We regularly partner with senior living communities, hospitals, and local organizations throughout The Woodlands to provide educational workshops and presentations for families, caregivers, and professionals.

These sessions focus on understanding disease progression, improving communication strategies, reducing caregiver burnout, and promoting safety and dignity for individuals living with cognitive or movement disorders. In addition to supporting families one-on-one, we equip professional and family caregivers with practical tools, training, and real-world guidance so they feel confident caring for loved ones at home.

By prioritizing education, local collaboration, and early support, we help strengthen the care network in The Woodlands and improve quality of life for both individuals living with Dementia or Parkinson’s and the caregivers who support them.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career in dementia care is deeply personal. My grandmother lived with dementia and passed away just over ten years ago. While I wasn’t her hands-on caregiver, I watched my family struggle with feeling lost, confused, and unsure of what resources or guidance were available. That experience stayed with me and planted the seed for what would eventually become my professional calling.

About six years ago, I found myself working in dementia care, driven by a desire to make sure other families didn’t feel as unprepared as mine once did. Over time, I gained education, experience, and a deeper understanding of how critical early guidance and practical tools are for families navigating cognitive decline. That commitment has grown into meaningful community outreach, including our Dementia Experience — an immersive educational program developed in partnership with Woodlands Senior Care that helps families, caregivers, and professionals better understand what it’s like to live with dementia and how to provide more compassionate, effective support.

In 2025, my father received his own dementia diagnosis, bringing my work full circle. Initially, his diagnosis left me questioning whether I could remain in dementia care professionally. Through prayer, honest self-reflection, and the support of an incredible community around me, I came to realize that this was exactly where I was meant to be. This time, our family had more knowledge, resources, and support, reinforcing just how much education can change the caregiving experience. That moment solidified my commitment to continuing this work — for him, for the families we serve, and ultimately for myself and my children one day — so no one has to navigate these diagnoses alone.

What sets me apart is the combination of professional expertise and lived perspective. I understand the clinical realities of dementia and Parkinson’s care, but I also understand the emotional weight families carry. I’m most proud of our focus on education and outreach, and of building support systems that empower families and caregivers long before they reach a crisis point. That dedication was recognized in 2024, when our At Your Side Home Care location was honored with Franchise of the Year.

This work hasn’t been easy, but it’s been meaningful. I’ve learned that leadership requires resilience, consistency, and compassion — and that education truly changes outcomes. What I want people to know about me and our brand is that our work is rooted in humanity, and in a deep commitment to helping people navigate some of life’s most difficult seasons with dignity, clarity, and confidence.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Woodlands — of course! If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d want them to experience everything that makes this community so special.

We’d start by checking out the latest artists at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, then spend time walking The Waterway and kayaking on Lake Woodlands. We’d stroll through the parks and trails that make The Woodlands feel both vibrant and peaceful all at once.

For food, we’d absolutely take advantage of the incredible dining scene — one of the many fabulous steakhouses for a great dinner, and plenty of stops at local favorites like Bellagreen, Churrascos, and Bluestone Lane for coffee and casual meals.

Self-care would be a must, so we’d stop by my favorite spot, SKE Beauty, for a facial and a little pampering. To wrap things up, we’d enjoy my favorite happy hour at The Village at The Woodlands Waterway and maybe end the week with cards or a fun dress-up event at The Conservatory at Alden Bridge.

And yes — I really do hang out in our senior communities! They have some of the most fun events and the most interesting people. Look up the closest one near you, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our entire leadership team deserves a huge shout-out. They work tirelessly and lead by example, consistently supporting one another and never hesitating to step in wherever they’re needed. That willingness to collaborate, adapt, and show up for both clients and team members is what keeps our organization strong and allows us to deliver exceptional care every day.
