We had the good fortune of connecting with Benny Muniz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benny, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued being a musician simply because music has been my passion for as long as I can remember. While I haven’t always played an instrument, I have always been fascinated by music and how different people from different backgrounds can come together to create a cohesive piece. 3 Exits to Hattiesburg has given me a lot of freedom to explore my creativity and find new avenues to express myself. While I initially started music as a guitarist and vocalist, over the years I’ve learned a wide range of instruments, explored new methods of songwriting, and been able to work closely on the physical artwork for our music. Overall, 3 Exits to Hattiesburg has opened my mind a lot more creatively, and as long as the band continues we’ll be pushing ourselves to be the most creative we can be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While the journey of 3 Exits to Hattiesburg has certainly been everything but easy, in a way it was never really tough work, as we’ve been friends much longer than we’ve been a band and we’ve been able to keep pushing ourselves because we’ve had so much fun along the way. We’ve come across so many challenges, whether it be recording costs, difficulties booking, or the most obvious as of late: COVID-19, but we’ve been able to find a silver lining in each challenge and find a way to keep working no matter what. We’ve learned that through everything, as long as we remain passionate about what we do, we will happily persevere through whatever may come our way. Our latest release, Nevermore, is what we view as our defining sound at the moment. If you want to know about us, listen to that and you’ll get a decent idea. If you want to know more or just want to hang out with some new people, come see a show and talk to us, we’re all just looking to get out of the house when it’s safer to do so.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have always loved Acadia on FM 1960. It is a bit away from downtown but I think that’s part of what makes it a great place to be. I first visited Acadia when 3 Exits to Hattiesburg performed there in 2017, and we’ve performed there countless times since. The people, the atmosphere, and most nights the music make Acadia a favorite even when I’m not performing. In Downtown, there’s some great sights to see along Buffalo Bayou, as well as the Graffiti Park in Midtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Before anyone else, 3 Exits to Hattiesburg’s drummer Adam Rogers has been such a key part of our success. Without Adam, I think our sound would be very different. On stage, Adam beats the drums so hard that you could probably feel them from a mile away, and in studio, he is extremely technical and knows exactly what needs to go where in a song. I also think we owe our successes so far to our fans, both in Houston and beyond, we’re proud to have so many people who listen to our music, wear our shirts, and support us online.
