We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The one thing about the fashion industry that not a lot of people realize, is that waste is a huge problem. Fabric waste, scrap fabric, and synthetic fibers (man made fabrics such as nylon, rayon, polyester, etc) are extremely hard on the earth, as they can not deteriorate and decompose. This creates co2 emissions and causes damage similar to vehicle pollution outputs and landfill outputs. It is a huge problem, and consumers must become aware of the devastating affects it is having on our ecosystem.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a child, I have always been obsessed with the fashion world. I grew up skateboarding in downtown Dallas. My mother was an interior decorator at the World Trade Center of Fashion. I was always exposed to design and the pleasant aesthetics that fashion captures. Although the budget never allowed for the nicest of garments, my parents always managed to have me dipped head to toe in second hand Polo and well shined penny loafers. Ever since then, I have been obsessed with understanding why brands do certain things, and the hunger for knowledge within the world of fashion never ceases. Nowadays, though, fashion has taken a different meaning for me completely. I approach it with an ethical sense. I approach each piece of recycled fabric or second hand garments as a collaborative art installment. I see a new life in it, I don’t allow my team to be discouraged by new challenges, competition, or the ever existing presence of everyone doing this on social media. We now approach everything we make with 100% sensibility by asking, “Why does this belong in the world?” At the end of the day, who gives a fuck what “they’re” doing. We got our own thing that is working. And its positive. Thats huge to me.
If you had a friend visiting what would you do, where you take them locally?
My most entertaining, relaxing, and inspirational times come from visiting France and seeing my friends. Taking in the sense of fashion in Paris. Shopping and nightlife in the streets. Traveling by train across the countryside and seeing everywhere from Italy to Germany in between. Few to many bevvys with the homies, quick stop for some puff in Amsterdam, and back home two weeks later. This is a yearly trip I look forward to but due to covid we couldn’t make it this year!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could not have Flavors without the support of my business partner Eric Barnes. We have learned a lot together, and from each other. I am thankful each and everyday for the support group that is our customers. They keep me going. It is so easy to get discouraged and distracted, and because of them, I am not allowed to.
