We had the good fortune of connecting with Bianca Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bianca, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Faith. Not my graduate degree from an Ivy League school. Not a book I read. Not a podcast I listened too. Not a business card I received. FAITH. And more often than not, my faith has only been the size of a mustard seed, but it’s absolutely been the most important factor behind my success. I’ve learned that larger goals don’t necessarily require any more faith than that which I have when I sit in a chair and trust that it won’t collapse.Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an Author, Activist, Advocate, and Sister! By title, I am a Licensed Master Social Worker. I provide social and emotional support to clients and address mental health needs. I am also a Professor at Baylor University’s Garland School of Social Work. Amidst the global health pandemic, stay at home orders, and quarantining – I am most excited about ways I’ve virtually connected with professionals all over the world to lend a hand and learn! My professional career is a result of late nights, early mornings, vision boards, tears, fear, and hunger. I’ve overcome challenges through prayer and hope, and eventually, that hope turned into faith.Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d take her to Shell Shack on Washington to enjoy seafood, cocktails, and a chill patio. In my opinion, Houston’s third ward has some of the most interesting spots to check out. Unfortunately, gentrification has resulted in displacement and exploitation in so many of our communities, but Third Ward has maintained such a rich African-American culture and is home to several amazing black-owned businesses. My friend and I would definitely rent bikes at Emancipation Park and embrace all the black magic in the air!Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my 90-year-old Great-Grandmother, Catherine Forte, aka “Grandmama”. For my entire life, my Grandmama has consistently provided love, support, and encouragement. She has always made me feel like every accomplishment was a really big deal! She was equally excited to hear me say an Easter speech at church at the age of 5 and serve as my class representative in graduate school. I published my first book, “Murdered by a Christian, on a Sunday” while grieving and going through so many transitions. My Grandmama was my marketing manager when I didn’t know I needed one. She shipped copies of my book all over the world. We’re still working on her ability to keep secrets, but she’s an amazing listener! We disagree quite often, but I’ve never doubted her love for me.
