We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianne Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brianne, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Other than working for myself the single most important decision I ever made that I would say contributed to my success, was having the confidence & bravery to do what I want to do without worrying what others think of me. It sounds like a cliche, but truly diving into my career & “winging it” so to speak was the best thing I could’ve done for my business. It allowed me to learn on the fly, grow as a designer and business owner, and it helped me develop my style I have as a designer today. I feel like the sooner you tune out the voices in your head telling you “you’re not good enough” or that “you’re an imposter” the sooner you will feel the freedom to be what you want to be as a business owner.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a brand and graphic designer. I focus on helping businesses create brands that elevate and build a foundation for their business through strong branding and strategic design. I’d say what sets me apart from others is that I’m a freelance designer who focuses on telling stories & capturing the essence of my client’s core values & personalities in their brand design. A lot of designers out there focus on the business itself and I focus on getting to know my client’s on a personal level, learning about why they got started and highlighting what makes them unique! It was a long journey to get where I am today! I started my career as a wedding photographer and realized it wasn’t really where my heart was. I was going to college for graphic design & one day I made a shift that forever impacted my career & focus and I’ve never looked back since! It was definitely not easy. Being a one-woman-show business is definitely a challenge at times and it took me years to get to this point. I still face challenges every day, but the minute I stopped worrying about “Will a client book?” and imposter syndrome, and really put my head down and focused on my work and what made me stand out in the industry, that’s when I started to succeed. There have been so many lessons learned along the way but my biggest lesson & piece of advice I would give to anyone starting out as a designer is to have confidence in yourself & what you bring to the table. Confidence sells & your work will speak for itself. People don’t book with a designer just for their style, they book with you because they like who you are and the services you provide to them. Being confident in who you are and what you bring to the table is so important as a small business owner!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man, this is tough! Houston has so much to offer, where to even begin?! I’d definitely tell them to check out some of my favorite cafes in the area such as Tout Suite and Common Bond. I’d also highly recommend to get some authentic Mexican food & good ol’ Texas BBQ! There’s so much to do in Houston I’m not sure where I’d take them, but I’d definitely explore some of the art walls downtown & take them to some of my favorite parks!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh man, this is a tough question. I feel like there have been so many people and things that contributed to my success and my story. I would probably have to shout out my friends and family for always supporting me and encouraging me to do my very best & chase whatever I’m passionate about.
