We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorian Giles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorian, what do you attribute your success to?
I would say there are several factors that are equally important to success as any other, but one that I think is very important to highlight is consistency. Consistency as it pertains to communication with people in your network, consistent preparation, as well as remaining consistent after failure. The path to success is not straight at all. In fact, there have been several moments in my life that one would imagine would provide for a straight path to whatever I was pursuing at the time, but even in those moments, life tends to happen and things are never as easy as they seemingly could be. However, I’ve learned that in those moments, we are being molded and tested. Life will always figure out who wants it most and if you stay consistent and seek to better yourself one day at a time, you will be successful.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Working in the sports industry has been a blast. The challenges I have faced don’t compare to the joys that I have experienced in the industry. Of course it’s been difficult along the way but that’s everything in life. The way I have been able to overcome it is through the grace of God and doing my best to exude love to others. Simply being a good human being is important. Working with Humble Over Hype was one of the greatest choices I’ve made because it’s an opportunity to be apart of the change that I want to see in the world. Athletes have platforms that spread across the globe and at Humble Over Hype, we focus on the spiritual and moral development of athletes which in turn, helps them understand themselves as more than a football or basketball player but as a human that offers so many gifts to the world. I think the emphasis on the spiritual aspect of it all is what sets us apart. We’re not afraid to go into any space and glorify the name of Jesus and we do it in a fun and unique way. We accept that people aren’t perfect and emphasize progress. That is key. I want the world to know that Humble Over Hype is a platform for athletes to be heard and to be the narrators of their own stories. At Humble Over Hype you have a voice and that will never change. As for myself beyond Humble Over Hype, I intend to share as many of my gifts and passions with the world as I can, so stay tuned.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best fried was visiting Houston, I would take them to workout with me (because health is wealth) at LJ Performance training on Richmond to get it in with the best trainer in Houston (IG: @ljperformancetraining). Over the course of the week we would indulge in some poetry slams and art galleries. I love the Writer’s Block events that Aj Mcqueen throws, so we would definitely support (IG: @ajmcqueen, @wearewritersblock) We would grab food at Sunshines Vegan restaurant, The Toasted Yolk, and probably Ono Poke (IG: @sunshineshealthfood, @thetoastedyolk, @onopokehouston) Then on the weekend we would catch some NBA and college basketball games and see some beautiful people at Kamp, Prospect Park, or Lost and Found because they are an amazing time and black owned (IG: @Kamphouston, @prospectparkhouston, @lostandfoundmidtown, @jrmartinsthemayor) Sunday and Tuesday…. we’re going to church for sure. Lighthouse church led by Pastor Keion Henderson and my brother Matthew Davis over at Lighthouse Central would get use right! (IG: @lhhoustonchurch, @pastorkeion, @that_davisguy)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother and grandmother, Dana and Carolyn Giles, as well as my entire family, have been the most significant factors in my success because they taught me resilience. Mentors such as David Mulugheta and Reggie Brown are true blessings to my life and certainly deserve credit for the progress that I’ve been able to make in the sports industry. Additionally I would not be where I am without my entire circle which is too large to mention but individuals like Chelsea Vaughn, Charles Harris, Andrew Pisechko, amongst others have been pivotal to my success in business. Lastly I would like to highlight Shakur Khalifah, Anthony Martin, Stephen Jones, Marcus Mondaine, Broderick Newbill, Daisy Rushing, Faith Miller and Kevin Turner for their endless support. I could go on all day because God has truly blessed me with the greatest support system! I will continue to acknowledge those that have lifted me to where I am today!
