We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Yuhas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance, ahhh…what a big topic! I have been working since I was 15 years old. And often, multiple jobs at a time. When I look back at the meaningful family and friend events that I missed because of work, it makes my heart ache just a little. What I have come to embrace is finding a rhythm of life that aligns with my core values and not only how I want to spend my time but how I want to feel while living this life. I am fortunate that I now get to do work that I love and that also aligns with my heart’s deepest longing. The work of my life is not just a job but a chosen lifestyle. I teach yoga but more importantly, I practice yoga. And the practice of yoga for me is about daily choices that best optimize the best version of me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career is my practice, my practice is my career.  I am blessed to have a vocation that is also my personal life compass.  My work is my spiritual relationship and I get to forever be a student of these ancient yoga teachings. The teachings and practice bring me back to what is real and honest in every moment.  It is both humbling and exhilarating.  My respect for these teachings goes deep and wide.  I am continually in awe of how powerful and relevant the tenants of yoga are today.  I started practicing yoga postures in 1998, I really learned about the philosophy in 2008.  At that time, I had a full-time career in fundraising and program management for a non-profit organization.  I continued to work in the corporate world to financially support myself but eventually, the goal and focus was to become a full-time yoga teacher.  After 15 years in the corporate world, I was able to transition to teaching yoga full-time and never looked back.  This practice has given me the courage to explore the blind spots, the dark corners and also, especially the light inside myself! And I get to share that with others!  Yoga has given me the courage to be truthful even when it’s not popular and feels a little risky.  This practice has given me the strength to stand honestly in the light of these teachings.  You can count on me to always be authentic, direct and kind.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Exploring HTX is so fun! Here we go! Arrival to the city first stop: leisurely lunch and wine outdoors at Tiny Boxwoods on W Alabama. A walk through the gorgeous Japanese Garden in Hermann park. Saturday afternoon brunch and art at the Menil Bistro and the Menil Collection. Saturday evening dinner at MF Sushi. Sunday afternoon spa at The Post Oak Hotel and lunch at Bloom & Bee. Sunday evening cocktails and dinner in the garden at Coltivare. If staying a bit longer, grocery shopping at Central Market and cooking an incredible meal at home. And if staying even longer, an overnight road trip to Austin! All sprinkled with lots of sunshine-filled walks in Memorial, the Buffalo Bayou and through Rice Campus. AND lots of yoga at The Atrium Yoga Studio!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I pay deep reverence to my yoga teachers, their teachers and the all of the teachers and students who have come before so that I may explore and share this practice today.
