We had the good fortune of connecting with Karla Richardson HR Equity Partner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karla Richardson, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In the HR Consulting professional service space, consultation services are most often oriented toward business owners, managing leaders and peer HR professionals. I launched HR Uncovered For You to provide a service that offers HR/Employment Law consultation to Employees – everyday working people – who are generally, uninformed about the ways in which HR compliance requirements in the workplace and U.S. employment law intersect to ensure and protect their employee rights.

Please tell us more about your career. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from most other HR Professionals, is that I understand and lend full consideration to the fact that HR is on both sides of the same coin. I believe that what’s good for the employer to know and leverage in their best interest, is equally good for the employee to know and leverage in their best interest.

I’ve achieved career satisfaction that is the result of a commitment to continuous learning beyond graduate school and professional certifications. Continuous learning for me, involves making a case for change, challenging the status quo and having influence on leaders to make decisions favorable to the employee population entirely, rather than to a select group of employees.

Along the way, I’ve learned that trust is the essential ingredient to any relationship. The same is true for the employment relationship. In the workplace, when an employee finds themselves in an adverse employee relations situation, there’s often no one who they can trust to ensure that their favorable outcome is the primary objective.

The world should know that I am an intentional advocate for workplace and HR equity. As a consultant and coach to the Employee, HR Uncovered For You is in support of equal employment opportunity, job protection and professional development.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A best friend visiting me would enjoy the best barbque from Killen’s. We’d enjoy pizza from Grimaldi’s and my favorite Mexican tastes from Lupe Tortilla!

For a great shopping experience, we’d spend an entire day at the Galleria Mall!

On the weekend, Discovery Green would be the place for being outdoors to enjoy a variety of entertainment themes, but we might also take in the vibe of City Center where weekend musical entertainers are in the midst of great shopping and dining options – a trifecta!

In a week, we could visit the Museum District (the Health Science Museum is my fave!), go to the Aquarium, and take in a show at Jones Theater.

We’d enjoy night-life downtown where we could opt for live music, dancing, poetry reading, hooka (if my friend wanted to try it), and it can be fun to ride the Metro Rail and ‘slide across’ downtown.

We’d finally take a day trip to visit NASA- ‘Houston would have a problem’ if we didn’t get in a trip to NASA!!

As an accountability partner, she has kept me buoyant in this sea of entrepreneurship, where the waters can be choppy! Jordyn has helped keep me afloat with her entrepreneurial experience and knowledge sharing. Jordyn has helped me and my business to have a social media presence, introduced me to the Kajabi platform my business operates on and she has simply been present and available to brainstorm my ideas, problem-solve tech issues and in many ways, big and small, support my endeavor of an upstart business.
