We had the good fortune of connecting with ADEJOKE JAGUNNA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ADEJOKE, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The inspiration to create Ejona stemmed from my own personal need for clothing that reflected my evolving style. As I got older and settled into the joys of adulthood, I found that my sleepwear did not evolve with my changing style. I found myself on weekend trips reaching for the same mismatched sets that were relatively presentable but lacking in style and quality. My sleepwear consisted of old college t-shirts, frumpy night dresses, uncomfortable lingerie or low-quality matching sets. Relatively I was comfortable, but considering we spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping I knew I needed better. I set out to find sleepwear that reflected my style, felt good and made me feel confident but nothing in the market met that need so I decided to create my own.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Ejona is a sleep and lounge wear brand designed specifically for women. Our line makes use of silk a luxury natural fiber. Our styles are created for every woman in mind; modern yet stylish, loose fitting to allow for unrestricted movement, comfortable enough for sleeping, lounging and everything in between. Our mission at Ejona is to bring a luxury timeless wardrobe essential into every woman’s wardrobe. Ejona focuses on quality craftsmanship, affordability, apparel that helps women feel confident, stylish and comfortable without breaking the bank. By investing in high quality sleepwear, we can rest better and be engaged and present for the moments that matter. Starting and operating a brand from scratch while maintaining a very demanding full-time job is one of the most difficult challenges I have faced. There is a lot of stress that comes with juggling both demands and doing them well. It has also not been easy establishing ourselves in the marketplace especially as we operate as an online brand. It is something we still struggle with, but I am extremely proud of the progress we have made in the past almost 2 years of operations. In that span of time we have grown a community of followers and supporters, have been featured in multiple publications, and been approached by global online marketplace brands to sell on their platform.
Lessons I have learned along the way it is back breaking work, but also the most fulfilling thing I have done. To hear our customers feedback about our products, how they sleep better, how impressed they are with our quality, and how they can’t wait for their next purchase is a feeling that makes all of it worth it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I find myself most recharged when I spend time with my family and close friends but when I venture out into the city, I absolutely checking out new restaurants and filling my belly with delicious treats from all over the world. I love how diverse Houston cuisine is, so honestly, I would recommend trying a different restaurant each day based on what you are in the mood for. Le Colonial, Kata Robata, Paulie’s, Les Ba’get , Turkey Leg Hut and Pepper Twins are a few that come to mind. I also enjoy shopping so would check out the Galleria and River Oaks District. I also love visiting museums; the Museum of fine arts and the natural science museums are a fun way to spend the afternoon.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout is dedicated to my support group that’s made up of family and close friends who have been a part of the journey from the beginning. From when I came up with the idea for my business and the decision to go head on with it, they have been there and continue to provide support, encouragements and advice. They have been there helping to pick designs, testing products, acting as a sounding board as I tested new ideas, showed up to every pop up, helped spread the word to any and everyone. Some of them are also business owners and they did not hesitate to share any information/ insight they found helpful and mention my brand in any room they walked into. And when things got hard for the brand, my support circle was there to help pick things where I left off, and in some instances to take over when I was unable to. I truly cannot have done it without them, and I am eternally grateful
