Meet Vonteyah Davis-Joseph | Self taught Baker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Vonteyah Davis-Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vonteyah, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
While attending UH I ran into a crisis where I felt unfulfilled with what I was doing. I experienced an epiphany and realized it was no time better than to pursue my passion for baking. And that’s when Sweetie V’s Desserterie was born in 2016.

What should our readers know about your business?
I began baking as a kid with my first Easy-Bake Oven. Since then it became a regular activity to bake for family and friends. All of my talents have been self-taught.

While attending UH I ran into a crisis where I felt unfulfilled with what I was doing. I experienced an epiphany and realized it was no time better than to pursue my passion for baking. And that’s when Sweetie V’s Desserterie was born. The pandemic has taught me to fulfill every dream possible. So I am currently attending the University of Houston Victoria to finish my degree while baking/running Sweetie V’s Desserterie.

Since then Sweetie V’s Desserterie has become one of Houston’s most successful home-based bakeries and continues to make deliveries throughout the Houston, Katy, and Richmond area.

To this date, we’ve sold over 20,000 baked goods in a variety of cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and custom cakes.

Prior to the pandemic, you could have found Sweetie V’s baked goods at our pop-ups at farmer markets, events, and food festivals. We are still taking orders online for pick up or delivery.

In July 2020, I took 3rd place in Houston’s Masked Baker competition and have made it a goal to place my bakery in future competitions across the country.

I would describe the process of being an entrepreneur as a non-stop rollercoaster ride. I have encountered many lessons being an entrepreneur and it’s never-ending in my opinion. I have taught myself to “respect my journey” and not to compare myself with others, and to enjoy every step of the way. The biggest lesson that I have learned this past year (2020-21) has become my Mantra. “I’m afraid, but do it anyway!”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have lived in Houston/Katy all my life so this would be a piece of cake.

•  Eat our food from Helens on the hill at Herman park (simple picnic)
• Sightsee around Herman park…burn calories from lunch lol (Japanese garden/McGovern Centennial Gardens)
• Visit The Menil Collection, Cullen Sculpture Museum, or Lawndale Art Center
• Go get dessert from Milk+Sugar (1848 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77098)
• Walk around Montrose to look at the thrift shops and art (take pictures)
• Stop by Blessings Plants & Music Houston to window shop plants or buy another one. 
• Thrift shopping 
• Travels table for dinner (520 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77006)
• Axelrad Beer Garden to end the day

I’m grateful to have a support system from my family, friends, boyfriend, and sweet customers. Which, I cherish my relationship with each individual.
